NuEyes Pro 3e is an augmented reality head-mounted display released in 2021.[1] It is a pair of tethered smart glasses made by NuEyes, a company in Orange County, California, that connect to a phone, tablet or computer over USB-C and show that device's picture as a large virtual screen in front of the wearer.[1][2]
NuEyes announced the glasses on 20 April 2021 for "light" enterprise customers and for gaming and entertainment, with shipping planned for May 2021.[1] The glasses weigh 68 grams and use birdbath optics with a resolution of 1920x1080 at 75 Hz.[2] Besides the stand-alone glasses, NuEyes has sold the Pro 3e in bundles for point-of-care ultrasound imaging and for people with low vision.[2][3]
History
NuEyes is a veteran-owned company in Orange County, California, that launched in January 2016. Its first products were meant to help people with eye conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and retinitis pigmentosa; by 2021 it also sold smart glasses for enterprise, gaming and entertainment use.[1] The Pro 3e is a separate, lighter product from the company's Pro 3 enterprise glasses, which ProVideo Coalition described in 2021 as having 4K displays and a 51-degree field of view.[4]
NuEyes announced the Pro 3e in a press release dated 20 April 2021 from Newport Beach, California. The release opened a presale and said shipping would begin in May 2021.[1] In the announcement, founder and CEO Mark Greget said: "To be able to tether my controller to my phone or tablet and stream games in 5G while enjoying the content on a crisp 148" viewing screen in full 1080p HD vs. a smaller 8-inch or 10-inch screen or a cumbersome VR device is the next evolution in technology for this space."[1] The release listed a separate gaming website, nugaming.io, alongside the NuEyes sites.[1]
ProVideo Coalition reported on 10 May 2021 that the glasses, sold as the NuGaming Pro 3e, were available at a price of US$699.[4] NuEyes marketed the Pro 3e as the first AR smart glasses with a "stylish 'glasses' look and feel" and as the first AR smart glasses that are "5G ready"; these are the company's own claims.[1][4]
Design and hardware
The Pro 3e takes its video signal from the connected device over USB Type-C using DisplayPort 1.4 and DisplayPort Alt Mode, with EDID support, and NuEyes lists its power draw as 5.0 V at 0.5 A.[2][5] The optics are of the birdbath type. NuEyes specifies a resolution of 1920x1080 at 75 Hz and a brightness of 2000 nits, and the frame has a diopter adjustment from 0D to -5D.[2] In a 2022 announcement NuEyes gave the field of view as 46 degrees.[6]
The size of the virtual screen is given differently in NuEyes' materials. The 2021 launch release described a 148-inch viewing screen in full 1080p HD, while the current product page describes "a huge 104"+ screen" when the glasses are connected to a 5G device.[1][2]
The glasses track head movement in three degrees of freedom (3DoF). The sensors are an inertial measurement unit (IMU) with an accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer, plus a proximity sensor.[2] Stereo speakers are built into the frame, and NuEyes lists LPCM audio support from 32 kHz to 192 kHz.[5]
Buttons on the frame adjust screen brightness and speaker volume, switch between a 2D standard view and a 3D stereoscopic view, and set the screen position to fixed or follow.[5] The glasses measure 2 x 6 x 2 inches folded and 7 x 6 x 2 inches unfolded.[2] ProVideo Coalition also listed foldable arms and an adjustable interpupillary distance (IPD).[4]
Compatibility
NuEyes' compatibility list covers phones from Huawei (Mate10/20/30/40 and P10/20/30/40), Samsung (Galaxy S10 and above), OnePlus (7 Pro and above), Oppo (Find X2), Xiaomi's BlackShark (2 and above), ZTE (Axon 10 Pro), Lenovo (Legion Game Phone) and Smartisan (R2). For tablets and computers it lists the iPad Pro 4th generation and above, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with USB-C Thunderbolt 3 and above, several laptops and mini PCs, and "other PCs with USB-C DisplayPort 1.4 & DisplayPort Alt Mode Support".[2] The launch release named the Samsung Galaxy S20 as an example of a phone the glasses could plug into directly.[1]
Applications
Gaming and entertainment
NuEyes launched the Pro 3e for watching video and playing games on a large virtual screen, including streamed games played with a controller connected to a phone or tablet.[1][4] ProVideo Coalition described the glasses as giving the wearer "a 148-inch portable screen for watching TV, movies or any other type of content".[4]
Ultrasound imaging
On 14 April 2022 NuEyes announced a partnership with Dolphin Medical Imaging (DMI) that paired the Pro 3e with DMI's portable wireless ultrasound probe. The glasses were described as working plug-and-play with Samsung 5G phones and tablets, so a practitioner could see the live ultrasound image in their line of sight instead of turning to a separate display.[6] DMI founder and chief medical officer Mel Harris called the combination "a potential game-changer in the growing field of point-of-care ultrasound", and Greget said it could "remove the need for large ultrasound carts".[6][7] NuEyes' product page lists a Pro 3e Ultrasound Bundle that includes a portable wireless ultrasound probe and software.[2]
Low vision
NuEyes also sells the Pro 3e as part of NuVision Tablet Edition, a low-vision kit that combines the glasses with the company's NuVision software and a Samsung tablet, which the NuEyes flyer names as the "Samsung Galaxy Active Tab 3". The software uses the tablet's camera for magnification of up to 14x, and it adds text-to-speech, contrast filters, a flashlight function and voice controls. According to the flyer, the software can be used with or without the Pro 3e glasses.[3] The retailer New England Low Vision listed the Tablet Edition at US$2,995.00 when accessed in September 2026.[8]
