Mouse Playhouse is a free VR puzzle game for SteamVR on Windows, played with tracked motion controllers in a room-scale play area. It was made by Tinkertainment, a student team in Cohort 25 of the SMU Guildhall game development program, and was described by team member Mario Rodriguez as SMU Guildhall's first VR title.[1][2] The Steam listing names Tinkertainment as developer and SMU Guildhall as publisher, with a release date of 31 March 2017.[3] It is listed as a Windows title that requires SteamVR.[3] The development team worked on HTC Vive hardware.[4]

Reviewed 9 October 2026. Checked title, developer, publisher, release date, platform, reviews, awards and development details against the Steam page and the SMU Guildhall and Game Developer articles About review dates.

Overview

The player guides pet mice toward cheese. According to SMU Guildhall, the player manipulates objects to solve puzzles across 15 levels, using blue objects provided in each level to steer the mice away from trouble, including enemy "Meowbots".[1][3] Outside the puzzles, the player can throw objects and play basketball, darts and a xylophone.[1] The Steam page lists the game as single-player, with Steam Achievements and tracked controller support, and gives the required play area as 2 m by 2 m.[3]

The game was built in Unreal Engine by a team of 18 students over about five months. In a development article published in February 2017, team member Mario Rodriguez described problems the team had with limited VR hardware (four HTC Vive sets shared among 18 developers), tracking interference from nearby base stations, and holding a frame rate of 90 frames per second or higher.[4][2]

Reception

SMU Guildhall states that the game won second place for Best Gameplay at the 2017 Intel University Games Showcase.[2] Steam user reviews were rated "Very Positive" as of October 2026, with 81 percent of 64 reviews positive.[3]
