The Logitech Chorus is an off-ear integrated audio accessory for the Meta Quest 2 virtual reality headset, made by Logitech and sold under model number 982-000153. Announced on August 17, 2022 and released on September 2, 2022 at a price of US$99.99, the Chorus replaces the Quest 2's built-in audio with a pair of speakers that mount to the headset's strap and hover just outside the wearer's ears rather than sitting on or inside them.[1][2][3] The design draws an immediate comparison to the off-ear "ear speakers" of the Valve Index, bringing a similar open-air listening experience to a standalone VR headset.[2][4]

The accessory is powered entirely over USB-C by the headset, so it carries no battery of its own, and it weighs 182 grams (6.42 ounces).[5][6]

Background and release

Logitech announced the Chorus on August 17, 2022, positioning it as the first high-performance off-ear audio solution designed specifically for the Meta Quest 2.[1][5] The product grew out of the company's wider push into virtual reality peripherals, which by 2022 already included the Logitech VR Ink stylus aimed at enterprise and creative users. Logitech framed the Chorus as a consumer accessory addressing a common complaint about the Quest 2: that the small speakers built into the headset's straps lacked volume and bass and leaked sound, leading many owners to plug in wired headphones or earbuds that broke the sense of presence and were awkward to don and remove around the headset.[3][2]

In the announcement, Vadim Kogan, head of Logitech's AR/VR Business Group, said the device "enhances the fit and comfort of Meta Quest 2, while allowing those who love long play sessions to stay immersed in their favorite games," while Matt Green, senior manager of acoustics engineering, described it as the product of "years of feedback from developers, gamers, and the VR community."[5][3] The Chorus opened for pre-order at announcement through Logitech and major retailers including Amazon, with general availability following on September 2, 2022.[2][1] It launched in a single white colorway under part number 982-000153.[7]

Design

The Chorus consists of two speaker units joined by a band that clips onto the Meta Quest 2 headset and connects to the headset's USB-C port. Once installed it stays attached to the headset, with each speaker arm folding down over an ear when in use. Logitech states the accessory attaches to all three of the official Quest 2 strap options, meaning the standard cloth strap, the Elite Strap, and the Elite Strap with Battery.[1][8] Reviewers noted in practice that fit was reliable with Meta's own straps but that some third-party head straps could interfere with mounting.[6]

A defining trait of the design is that the speakers never touch the ears. They sit slightly away from the head in an off-ear, open-back configuration, an approach Logitech says lets the sound waves interact with the geometry of the listener's ears to give a more natural sense of spatial audio, and which keeps the ears cool and uncovered during long or physically active sessions such as VR fitness.[1][5] The open design is deliberately not isolating: ambient room sound passes through so the wearer can stay aware of their surroundings, with the trade-off that audio leaks outward and offers little privacy at higher volumes.[2][9]

The Chorus has no power button. Instead it uses a flip-to-mute mechanism: rotating the speaker arms up and away from the ears mutes the audio, and lowering them back into position resumes playback.[1][8] It carries no battery, drawing all of its power from the headset over the USB-C connection.[5][8]

Audio

Sound is produced by a pair of custom-tuned Balanced Mode Radiator (BMR) drivers in an open-back enclosure. BMR drivers combine mid-range and treble reproduction in a single driver, which Logitech uses to deliver a wide frequency range and a large sound stage from a compact, lightweight unit positioned off the ear.[5][10] The same BMR driver technology had previously appeared in other Logitech audio products, and here it is tuned specifically for the off-ear VR use case.[10] The accessory is an audio-output device and is not marketed with a built-in microphone; reviewers and retail listings did not report microphone functionality.[6][8]

Connectivity

The Chorus connects to the Meta Quest 2 through the headset's USB-C port and includes a USB-C passthrough so that the headset can still be charged while the accessory is plugged in, without unplugging the audio first.[1][2] The passthrough port is intended for power only. Because the single USB-C port is occupied by the audio connection, the Chorus cannot be used at the same time as a data link cable, so it is incompatible with wired PC-tethered play such as Oculus Link / Meta Quest Link.[2] Some early reviewers also reported that charging the headset through the passthrough required the Quest 2 to be powered on, particularly when combined with the battery-equipped Elite strap.[6]

Reception

Reviews were broadly positive, with the Chorus widely seen as a meaningful upgrade over the Meta Quest 2's integrated speakers. Outlets praised the off-ear comfort, the lighter and cooler fit compared with conventional headphones, and a clear improvement in sound quality, describing fuller low end, clearer mid-range, and brighter treble than the headset's native audio.[6][9] Several reviewers explicitly compared the result to the off-ear audio of the Valve Index and welcomed seeing that experience on a standalone headset.[4][2]

Criticisms centered on the constraints of the design rather than the audio itself. The open-back speakers leak sound and provide little isolation, the accessory is tied exclusively to the Quest 2 and cannot be moved to other devices, and the occupied USB-C port prevents simultaneous wired PC streaming.[2][9] Reviewers also noted minor usability quirks, including the volume resetting on each use and the previously mentioned charging behavior with the Elite Strap with Battery.[9][6]
