Limberjack is a free VR game developed by DigitasLBi and published by Husqvarna. Released on Steam on 1 September 2016, it recreates competitive limbing, the removal of branches from a felled tree. It was designed for HTC Vive and uses tracked controllers to handle a virtual chainsaw.

Reviewed 20 October 2026. Game identity, launch gameplay and production, dated announcements, and listed setup and system requirements. Legacy classification fields and categories were retained. Current executable compatibility and online-service operation were not tested. About review dates.

Gameplay

The player stands beside a 2.7-metre log at a mountainside lake, picks up a virtual Husqvarna 359 chainsaw and removes 24 branches against the clock. Branches must be cut close to the trunk. Cutting too far along a branch requires another pass while the clock continues.

The launch version includes local and global high-score lists. Players can compare their own attempts, compete in groups at home or pursue a place on the global leaderboard. The player at the top of that leaderboard uses a virtual golden chainsaw. A separate diversion measures how far a player throws the chainsaw into the lake.

Features

The game is single-player, with Steam Achievements and Steam Leaderboards.

Development and release

DigitasLBi developed Limberjack with Husqvarna after experimenting with a virtual limbing prototype in its VR lab in April 2016. The project brought a discipline from the World Logging Championship into a game that people could play without operating a real chainsaw. For demonstrations at dealer, VIP and sales events, Husqvarna also used a mock-up chainsaw incorporating a Vive controller. This event prop was distinct from the standard controller setup for the downloadable game.

Husqvarna's international launch announcement followed on 2 September 2016. The company presented the game as a way to generate interest in logging and explore possible future uses of VR in education and training. Its launch plans included monthly winners and a final in Sweden in August 2017 for twelve leading players.

On 30 September 2016, the team announced a pink appearance for October as a breast-cancer-awareness initiative, alongside gameplay bug fixes.

Setup instructions

Limberjack uses SteamVR and requires a room-scale area measuring 2.5 metres by 2 metres. This is the game's stated space requirement, in addition to the PC specifications below.

The September 2016 launch instructions describe holding Ctrl while starting the game to open its quality-settings screen. Its three presets were Low (GTX 970), Medium (GTX 980) and High (GTX 1080).

System requirements

These are the listed Windows requirements for the 2016 game. The operating-system entries describe that release's requirements; the Steam client ended support for Windows versions earlier than Windows 10 on 1 January 2024.
