Google Spotlight Stories: Pearl is a free, single-player animated virtual reality short from Google's Spotlight Stories program, directed by Patrick Osborne. The Steam version, listed as VR only, was released on 19 October 2017, with Google Inc. as developer and publisher.[1] Pearl was also released as a YouTube version and in the Google Spotlight Stories mobile app.[2]

Reviewed 9 October 2026. Checked the Steam listing (app 476540: developer, publisher, release date, VR only, user reviews), the UploadVR 2016 report and Google's production write-up. About review dates.

Overview

Pearl tells the story of a girl and her father on a cross-country road trip, set inside their hatchback.[1] The film runs 5 minutes 39 seconds, and Google's production write-up says it was created at the same time as a theatrical short, a 360-degree video and a VR experience.[3]

UploadVR's 2016 report on the planned Steam release says one scene differs in the HTC Vive version: when the daughter sticks her head out of the sunroof to catch fireflies, Vive viewers can also stick their heads out of the sunroof, while viewers of the other versions only watch her.[2]

Reception

The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2016 and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short Film.[3] The Steam page states that it won a 2017 Emmy Award for Outstanding Innovation in Interactive Storytelling.[1] Steam user reviews were rated "Very Positive" as of October 2026, based on 389 reviews.[4]
