Far Cry VR: Dive Into Insanity is a cooperative location-based virtual reality shooter set in the world of Far Cry 3. It was made by nDreams together with Ubisoft and Zero Latency, and it is playable only at Zero Latency's free-roam VR arenas. Up to eight players at a time walk through a shared play space wearing headsets and carrying rifle-shaped controllers, and a session lasts about 30 minutes.[1][2]

Ubisoft announced the experience on 10 September 2020 during its Ubisoft Forward presentation, and it opened at Zero Latency venues at the start of June 2021.[3][2] Players are captured by the pirate warlord Vaas Montenegro, the antagonist of Far Cry 3, and have to fight their way off the Rook Islands as a team.[4][5] As of October 2026, Zero Latency still names Ubisoft's Far Cry among the licensed properties in its catalogue.[6]

Gameplay

The experience takes place on the Rook Islands, the tropical setting of Far Cry 3. The player group is captured by Vaas and his pirates and must explore the island and survive together.[4][1] Ubisoft's launch announcement describes the pirates hunting the players "for sport across paradise" and says that "teamwork is just as important as a quick trigger finger".[2] Ubisoft and nDreams both describe the game's mechanics as simple and intuitive and name collaboration and teamwork as central to getting through the jungle.[4][1]

Each player carries a rifle-shaped controller.[7] According to Engadget, players face an ambush, shoot henchmen from a creaky cable car, cross a cave and fight Vaas's flame-throwing followers.[8] UploadVR's Harry Baker described an opening section of simple gunplay on the island to warm players up, the cable car ride, a break from combat to explore a cave filled with "psychedelic gas-expelling fungi" that cause hallucination effects, a group fight in the same cave with enemies appearing from all angles, and a finale that mixes hallucinations, pirates, Vaas and new enemy types.[9] MIXED noted that Vaas delivers "delusional monologues" during play.[10]

Development

Ubisoft's German announcement press release described the experience as developed in collaboration with Zero Latency VR ("in Zusammenarbeit mit Zero Latency VR entwickelt"). The press release placed it within Ubisoft's wider location-based work, following Notre-Dame VR and the company's VR escape rooms, and called it Ubisoft's entry into multiplayer free-roam VR.[4] UploadVR noted at the announcement that Ubisoft's two Assassin's Creed VR arcade titles resembled cooperative escape rooms, while in this one players "hold rifle-shaped controllers and blow up enemy bases".[7]

British VR studio nDreams lists the game in its portfolio as an eight-player, 30-minute co-op shooter made with Ubisoft and Zero Latency VR.[1] Later coverage also credits nDreams as developer: UploadVR wrote that "the attention to detail brought to Far Cry VR from nDreams was very welcome", and MIXED pointed to the studio's earlier work on Fracked and Phantom: Covert Ops.[9][10]

In the announcement, Deborah Papiernik, Ubisoft's vice president of new business, said the experience would let players worldwide immerse themselves in the setting of Far Cry 3 and take on its villain. Tim Ruse, chief executive of Zero Latency VR, said it would be a special experience for fans to return to Rook Island in this new way.[4][5]

Hardware

The game runs on Zero Latency's arena system, which the company has changed over time. At launch, Engadget reported that players wore an HP Reverb headset connected to a backpack PC with an 8th generation Intel Core i7 processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 graphics card, and that play areas measured 200 to 400 square meters depending on the venue.[8] In May 2022 Zero Latency announced that it was moving to standalone HTC Vive Focus 3 headsets that receive PC-rendered video wirelessly over a local Wi-Fi 6E network, dropping the backpack PCs.[11] UploadVR played the game on this system at Zero Latency's Docklands venue in Melbourne, which it described as the first location to adopt it, and MIXED played it on the same setup in Hanover, Germany, reporting that the video was streamed from GeForce RTX 2070 PCs through Cisco Meraki access points.[9][10]

Release

Ubisoft said at the announcement that the game would come out in 2021 exclusively at Zero Latency VR locations, of which there were more than 45 in 22 countries at the time.[4] Ubisoft announced on 1 June 2021 that it was open at 33 locations worldwide.[2] Road to VR reported at launch that it was bookable at 50 Zero Latency locations in 23 countries.[12]

Ticket prices are set by each venue. In June 2021, So Perth reported a price of A$59 per person for the 30-minute experience at Zero Latency Perth.[16] As of October 2026, Zero Latency's investor site lists Ubisoft (Far Cry) among its intellectual property partners, alongside Sony Pictures (Jumanji), Games Workshop (Space Marine) and CD Projekt Red (Cyberpunk 2077).[6]

Reception

After playing at Zero Latency Docklands, Harry Baker of UploadVR wrote that "Far Cry VR offers a compelling location-based multiplayer VR experience for the experienced and new to VR alike." His main complaint was length: "it felt over too soon."[9]

Jan Wöbbeking of MIXED found that "the wide view over the island is particularly convincing" during the gondola ride and that, "although the shooter-like combat is simple, it kept me entertained." He also wrote that the graphics could not match the regular Far Cry games and that "the intensive fixed foveated rendering only makes the image look a bit too blurry at the edges."[10]
