Contractors is a multiplayer military first-person shooter for Virtual Reality developed and published by Caveman Studio. It launched in Steam Early Access on December 14, 2018 for SteamVR and Oculus PC headsets, and a standalone Oculus Quest version followed on December 3, 2020.[1][2] The game combines realistic, manual weapon handling with the fast pace of a mainstream console shooter, and it supports player-created content through a community modkit.[3][4]

Contractors is built around team-based and cooperative combat across a set of indoor and outdoor maps. Reviewers have positioned it between the simulation-focused Onward and the lighter Pavlov, describing it as a more approachable, arcade-leaning take on the VR shooter.[3] A separate battle royale entry, Contractors Showdown, was released later by the same studio.[5]

Gameplay

Contractors is a first-person shooter played with Tracked Motion Controllers. Players hold and operate firearms with their hands, performing manual actions such as gripping magazines and chambering rounds, and the game uses a full-body inverse kinematics system that estimates the player's body pose from head and hand positions.[2][6] Players can choose between floating hands or the IK-driven body representation.[6]

The game offers more than 30 weapons.[2] It includes both competitive and casual modes. Online play covers player-versus-player matches, including larger 16-player "Ground War" battles, alongside offline and online cooperative missions for up to four players and a four-player zombie survival mode.[2][7] A free-roam mode lets a single player practice against bots offline.[1] Supported play styles include Standing and Room-scale setups.[1]

Development

Contractors was developed by Caveman Studio, an independent team that also publishes the game.[1] It entered Steam Early Access on December 14, 2018, available to SteamVR and Oculus PC users.[1] When the Oculus Quest version arrived in December 2020, Caveman Studio reduced texture quality to fit the mobile hardware while keeping the same gameplay and full-body inverse kinematics as the PC release.[2]

The studio added user-generated content support across PC and Quest, with a modkit that lets players build and share custom maps. Caveman Studio hosts this content on mod.io, which works across both the Steam and Oculus versions of the game.[4] Later updates expanded the modkit further: a November 2024 "Mobilized" update added support for vehicles, ziplines and vaultable walls in custom maps, along with a new game mode and higher player counts.[8]

Release

Platform Release Date
SteamVR / Oculus PC (PC VR) Early Access December 14, 2018[1]
Oculus Quest (standalone) Full release December 3, 2020[2]

The Quest version launched at US$19.99 and was offered as cross-buy with the existing Oculus Rift version, so owners of the PC edition received the Quest edition at no extra cost; it also supported cross-play between the two platforms.[9][2] On the Meta Quest store the game carries an 18+ rating for extreme violence.[7]

Reception

On Steam, Contractors holds a "Very Positive" overall rating from roughly 4,000 user reviews, with about 83 percent of the English-language reviews rated positive.[1] On the Meta Quest store it has a user rating of 4.2 out of 5 from about 9,400 ratings.[7]

In a January 2021 review of the Quest version, UploadVR scored the game 4 out of 5 and called it "an approachable Call of Duty-style shooter," praising its pacing and the breadth of its game modes while criticizing the Quest visuals as "very, very poor even compared to other Quest titles."[3] Road to VR described the title as offering casual and competitive modes across maps with a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces, and over 30 weapons.[2] The site 6DOF Reviews characterized it as a more polished and rounded option than Onward or Pavlov.[6]

Contractors Showdown

In 2024 Caveman Studio released Contractors Showdown, a VR battle royale set in the same franchise. It launched on Oculus Quest and Steam on April 25, 2024, supporting 60-player matches, at a price of US$19.99.[5] The studio later added an extraction-based mode called Exfil Zone to Showdown.[10]
