Balloon Chair Death Match is a seated VR action shooter for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift on SteamVR, developed and published by Climax Studios.[1] It entered Early Access on Steam in December 2016[2] and was released in full on July 13, 2017.[3] The game is still listed on Steam as a Windows title that requires a VR headset.[1]

Reviewed 9 October 2026. Checked title, developer, publisher, platforms, release dates, gameplay and review statements against the Steam listing, Steam review API and two UploadVR articles About review dates.

Overview

The player sits on an office chair held aloft by balloons above a city and fights other balloon-borne pilots. Shooting out an opponent's balloons lowers their altitude, and kills come from sending them into floors, bridges or traffic.[2] One hand steers the chair with the thumbstick on Oculus Touch or the trackpad on Vive, and the other hand fires weapons.[3] UploadVR described the seated design as intended to keep the game comfortable and avoid the need for room-scale space.[2]

The Steam listing describes a single-player campaign of 14 missions across two cities, deathmatch and team deathmatch against bots, and multiplayer deathmatch, team deathmatch and survival modes, with five weapons that range from pigeon launchers to laser guns.[1] The full release added expanded single-player challenges, a co-op survival mode for up to four players and a new competitive mode on smaller maps.[3] The store page also lists comfort settings and cross-play between Rift and Vive players.[1]
