The Arpara AIO 5K is a standalone virtual reality head-mounted display developed by the Chinese company Arpara, which styles the product "arpara AIO 5K". It was first announced in June 2021 as the arpara All-In-One VR Headset. The headset has two 1.03-inch Micro-OLED displays with 2560 x 2560 pixels per eye, pancake optics and a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor, and arpara described it as the first all-in-one VR device with dual micro-OLED displays and pancake optics.[3][4]

The AIO 5K was crowdfunded on Kickstarter alongside its PC-connected sibling, the Arpara Tethered 5K. The joint campaign opened on 14 December 2021 and raised US$728,139 from 1,200 backers against a US$50,000 goal.[5][6] Deliveries were first estimated for March 2022, but the standalone model fell well behind that date. arpara told backers in September 2022 that AIO mass production had begun, and in May 2023 the research firm Omdia wrote that AIO pre-orders had come in but had not yet shipped.[7][8]

Reviewed 28 September 2026. Checked status, specs, prices, dates, quotes and crowdfunding figures against arpara's archived AIO product, spec and FAQ pages, Kickstarter updates 28-37, the launch press releases, Omdia, UploadVR, Auganix, VRX and Chinese press reports. About review dates.

Announcement and crowdfunding

Global reveal

arpara announced two headsets at a global reveal event titled "Discover Yourself in a Parallel Universe" on 1 June 2021: the tethered arpara VR Headset and the standalone arpara All-In-One VR Headset. In that announcement the all-in-one model weighed 380 g, ran on the Qualcomm XR2 platform, had "inside-out 6DoF head and hand tracking", a battery listed as "4600mA", a 95-degree field of view and a 90 Hz refresh rate, and supported wired and wireless streaming for SteamVR games. The release said the all-in-one headset "will be available afterwards" and gave no price or date for it.[4][9] The same event introduced arparaland, a virtual social platform.[4]

Kickstarter campaign

arpara launched its Kickstarter campaign for the Tethered 5K and the AIO 5K on 14 December 2021. Its press release listed the AIO at 380 g with a 90 Hz refresh rate, a 6500 mAh battery and Wi-Fi 6, and described the XR2 platform as capable of driving four concurrent cameras. Early-bird pledges for the AIO started at US$599, and the box was to contain the headset, a power adapter, a charging cable, an instruction guide, a safety guide and two controllers. Chief executive Fan Zhang said: "In designing VR Tethered and VR AIO, we wanted arpara users to be transported to an alternate universe in stunning detail, regardless of whether they're maneuvering their way in PCVR games or enjoying multimedia on a virtual big screen."[6][10] Chinese tech site Shenzhenware reported that the US$599 early-bird price was a limited three-day offer against a stated retail price of US$1,099.[11]

VRX, the news site of VR Expert, reported that the campaign was fully funded within 15 minutes of launch.[12] It closed on 12 February 2022 with US$728,139 pledged by 1,200 backers.[5][13] Both headsets had an estimated delivery date of March 2022.[10]

Pre-launch criticism

Two days after the campaign went live, UploadVR published an editorial by Ian Hamilton urging readers not to back it. Hamilton cited early hands-on reports that called the hardware "not good VR", the company's lack of a track record, and reports that testers had used third-party NOLO hardware for positional tracking. He was most skeptical of the claim that the all-in-one model had its own inside-out tracking with "millimeter-level" positioning. He also noted that a since-deleted video of what was said to be the all-in-one headset showed an interface resembling Meta's Quest, including a "guardian" setting. The editorial concluded: "we recommend in the strongest terms possible avoiding the Arpara crowdfunding campaign."[13]

Production delays

arpara's Kickstarter updates through 2022 describe a series of delays to the AIO 5K:[7]

Update date Status reported by arpara
29 March 2022 A video showed progress on fixing a jitter problem in AIO streaming; COVID-19 quarantines of partners in Shanghai had slowed optimization work.
12 April 2022 Core components were held in areas of China under logistics controls; AIO trial production was estimated to start around the end of April.
25 May 2022 AIO trial production had begun.
10 June 2022 AIO mass production was expected around the end of June or early July, and OpenXR compatibility around mid-July.
18 July 2022 The AIO production timeline would be finalized after production of the tethered units was finished.
18 August 2022 Mass production of the tethered units was complete and AIO mass production was being scheduled; arpara also said it had negotiated international rights to 11 games that backers would get free.
27 September 2022 AIO mass production had started the previous week, and all controllers had been produced.

The 27 September 2022 post (update #37) is the most recent update on the campaign page.[7]

China pre-sale

In March 2022, arpara said the AIO 5K would soon go on pre-sale through Chinese e-commerce platforms.[14] The limited pre-sale opened on 6 May 2022 with an announced retail price of 6,999 yuan. Three discounted tiers were offered: 4,999 yuan (limited to 100 units), 5,699 yuan (200 units) and 5,999 yuan (300 units). That announcement gave the battery as "6700mh" with up to three hours of play, a different capacity from the 6500 mAh figure in arpara's English-language materials.[15]

Availability and status

arpara's global website listed the AIO 5K as a product during 2023, with a specification sheet, a user guide, an FAQ and a box-contents list. The listed box contents were the headset, two controllers, a USB Type-C 3.2 charging cable, an AC adapter, a user guide and a carrying case; buyers had to supply four 1.5 V AA batteries for the controllers.[3][2] In a May 2023 teardown blog about the Tethered 5K, Omdia analyst Jay Shao wrote that AIO pre-orders "have started coming in" but "have yet to be shipped."[8] The tethered model was already on sale in China by March 2022, arpara reported finishing mass production of the tethered units in August 2022, and Omdia's teardown was of a Tethered 5K unit.[14][7][8]

In July 2024, Sina XR reported that Zhejiang Luxi Technology, the company that operates the arpara brand, had been listed as a judgment debtor by several Chinese courts, with enforcement amounts totaling nearly 656,900 yuan.[16]

Design and hardware

Display and optics

The lens side of the headset, marked with its 56-72 mm IPD range and diopter adjustment range

The AIO 5K has two 1.03-inch silicon-based micro-OLED displays. arpara lists a combined resolution of 5120 x 2560 at 70 Hz, or 3840 x 1920 at 90 Hz, so the headset runs at 90 Hz only at the lower resolution. It also lists 3514 pixels per inch, 32 pixels per degree, a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, a color gamut of 90% DCI-P3 (127% sRGB) and a 95-degree field of view.[1][2] The displays have a 1 microsecond response time, and arpara said their pixel density removes the screen door effect.[10] Omdia identified the displays in arpara's headsets as OLED-on-silicon (OLEDoS) panels from the Chinese microdisplay supplier SeeYA.[8]

The AIO 5K and the Tethered 5K use the same displays and the same pancake optics.[2] arpara's product page advertises a "5-lens pancake design" and gives the thickness of the folded-path optical group as 10 to 20 mm, compared with 40 to 50 mm for the Fresnel optics it attributes to competitors.[3] The interpupillary distance adjusts from 56 to 72 mm. The diopter adjusts from -5D to +1D, which arpara describes as covering 500 degrees of nearsightedness to 100 degrees of farsightedness.[1][2] Omdia's teardown of the Tethered 5K, which arpara says uses the same optics, found four lenses in the optical module: three form the folded optical path and the fourth provides the -5.00D to +1.00D diopter adjustment.[8] This count differs from the five lenses in arpara's AIO marketing.[3]

Processing and connectivity

The headset uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. It has Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, one USB Type-C 3.2 port and one 3.5 mm audio jack.[1][2] It does not take SIM cards or USB flash drives.[2]

Tracking and controllers

The AIO 5K has six-degrees-of-freedom inside-out tracking and four built-in cameras, and it needs no external base stations.[1][2] arpara claims 0.8 mm positioning accuracy, positioning delay under 2 ms and ground-detection accuracy under 10 mm, and says the system uses SLAM. The same cameras provide a see-through (passthrough) mode that shows the surroundings when the user leaves the safety area.[3] The June 2021 announcement described "head and hand tracking", without saying whether hands were tracked by the cameras or through the controllers.[4] arpara's later product and specification pages did not list hand tracking as a feature.[3][1]

The two controllers use infrared optical tracking. arpara lists tracking delay under 20 ms within 1.2 m, a positioning angle range of 230 by 180 degrees, 256 levels of vibration (0-255), a separate Bluetooth module, and power from four AA batteries, which it says last 50 hours.[3]

Ergonomics, audio and battery

arpara claims the headset is half the size of competing VR devices and two-thirds of their weight. It uses a strap tilted at 15 degrees, and the battery sits at the rear to reduce pressure on the face and the bridge of the nose.[3] An active cooling system (air duct, heat sinks and a fan) is meant to control temperature and prevent fogging, and the optical module is sealed against dirt. The body is made of PC and ABS plastics, and the facial pad is foam with mesh fabric. The strap is removable, but the battery is not.[2]

The headset has two directional speakers and two noise-canceling microphones. It works with 3.5 mm, USB-C and Bluetooth headphones.[3][2] The 6500 mAh battery is rated for up to 3 hours of video playback or 2.5 hours of gaming. It charges fully in about 2.5 hours over USB Power Delivery.[2] The sensors listed are a G-sensor, a gyroscope, a proximity sensor and an electronic compass.[1]
