Abduction Episode 1: Her Name Was Sarah is an unreleased horror survival game for virtual reality headsets and Windows PCs, developed and published by Red Iron Labs, a studio based in Calgary, Alberta.[1][2] It is the first full episode in the studio's ABDUCTION series, in which each title follows a different character dealing with alien abductions. In Episode 1 the player controls Sarah, who wakes up in a hospital and has to recover her memories and find the others.[1]

The series began with an earlier OSVR demo that Red Iron Labs later released separately as Abduction Prologue: The Story Of Jonathan Blake.[3] Red Iron Labs ran an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign for ABDUCTION in late 2016, and early alpha builds of Episode 1 were circulating within the team by March 2017.[4][5] As of September 2026 its Steam store page still lists it as "Coming soon", with no release date and no price.[1]

Gameplay

Red Iron Labs describes the ABDUCTION series as a "no-handholding" design. The player gets little guidance, is likely to die and has to work out alone how to stay alive; the studio says the games are "created in an older style of games".[1] Episode 1 opens with Sarah waking in a hospital. To survive the abduction she has to recover her fragmented memories and locate the others.[1] The developer calls Episode 1 "our first major series of chapters" and says it covers Sarah coming to terms with alien abductions and alien encounters while trying to stay alive. It lists the genre as "VR / Horror / Survival".[1]

The game is single-player. On Steam it is listed with full controller support, tracked controller support, VR support and captions. Its listed hardware support covers keyboard and mouse, a standard gamepad, OSVR, Oculus and the HTC Vive.[1] In a 2019 profile of the studio, the Calgary Journal reported that Red Iron Labs wanted Abduction to put its own twist on a traditional alien-style game.[6]

Development

Red Iron Labs is a Calgary studio co-founded by Lloyd Summers and Rosalinda Hernandez.[6] Its first ABDUCTION title started as an OSVR game built in 2016 to be demoed at Razer's booth at E3; its mechanics were not originally designed for the HTC Vive. The studio later expanded the demo into a small game of its own.[3] In May 2016 Red Iron Labs submitted Abduction to Steam Greenlight.[7]

At first the prologue demo and the planned episode shared one Steam page. In November 2016, while testing builds distributed through that page, the studio reported the game running well on OSVR HDK 1.3 and 1.4 headsets, the HTC Vive, gamepad and keyboard. The Oculus Rift CV1 and DK2 were still untested and needed to run through the OSVR framework.[8] In February 2017 Red Iron Labs announced that the prologue would get its own dedicated Steam page because it had "slowly grown to become a mini game all on its own".[9] Episode 1 then moved to its own store page.[1][3] Red Iron Labs formally released the prologue on 11 April 2018, and its release announcement pointed players to Episode 1.[3]

Crowdfunding

Red Iron Labs ran an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign for ABDUCTION that ended in December 2016. On the last day the studio promoted a $5 perk and said that after the campaign the price would rise to $15 in Early Access and $20 at release (the announcement does not state a currency).[4] An announcement the following day said the crowdfunding had wrapped up and described the game as "an amazing 9 month project" so far.[10]

Alpha builds

The studio's March 2017 company update listed "ABDUCTION Episode 1: Her Name Was Sarah" with a release date of TBD and the status "Building toward Early Access".[11] On 7 March 2017 Red Iron Labs said the team had started circulating early alpha builds internally. At that point the script and voice recording were finished, the audio was close to complete, level design was done and final assembly was under way.[12] A blog post from the same day said alpha builds would soon go out to crowdfunders and early supporters. Background music, sound effects and voice-over work were produced with Last Hour Productions, and the developer called it "the longest script I've ever put into a video game".[5]

Release

Episode 1 has not been released. Its Steam page (app 600360) shows "Coming soon" with no date or price, and Red Iron Labs' own product page lists it under "Coming Soon" at $19.99 (currency not stated).[1][2] Metacritic lists the PC version with no critic or user reviews.[13]
