AI Rebellion (sold on Steam as AI Rebellion VR) is a virtual reality space flight and combat game developed and published by Immergity, a Moscow studio founded in December 2016.[1][2] The player is a starfighter pilot who flies from a seated cockpit, using the HTC Vive or Oculus Touch motion controllers to work the ship's control levers and fight squadrons of fighters run by a rogue artificial intelligence.[3]

The game entered Steam Early Access on 18 April 2017 for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, left Early Access on 2 May 2017, and was also listed in the Gallery section of the Oculus Store by May 2017.[3][4][5] As of October 2026, the Steam version sells for US$9.99 and has a "Mixed" user review rating.[2]

Gameplay

AI Rebellion is a single-player game played seated with tracked motion controllers.[3] The player flies the ship directly with control levers inside the cabin; Immergity's original Steam description listed "full control of your spaceship by control levers in your cabin" among its features.[3] The Steam description later listed three types of spaceships and eight locations, and Immergity's Russian-language product page listed three ship types and ten locations.[2][6] The April 2017 description had listed four ship types.[3]

In a review published on HTC's Viveport Reviews blog in July 2018, Joshua Hawkins of Greenlit Content described two types of weapons and a progression in which the player gains access to a few larger ships, which he said all fly the same way and differ mainly in their number of weapons and the look of the bridge. In the first mission the player crashes into a planet and meets a robot that helps along the way, and later the player reaches an "AI planet", where Hawkins found the enclosed space frustrating to fight in.[7] Update notes from the developer mention levels numbered up to 10, levels with corridors, an EMP gun, a repairer ship in the last levels, and a timer in level 10 that is disabled once a planet there is destroyed.[8][9][10] The Steam version has six achievements and supports Steam Trading Cards.[2]

Story

According to the store description, the game is set in 2753. An artificial intelligence called P.A.I. was built to run a central military station and worked without a single failure for three years of continuous operation; most pilots were sent back to Earth and only trainees stayed on patrol. Contact with the station is later lost, and so is contact with the team of technicians sent to repair it. The Commander-in-Chief of the Intergalactic Army then orders Captain Parker, an experienced pilot, to fly to the station, find out what happened, fix the problem and report back.[2][5]

Development

Immergity described itself as a young studio making VR and AR games and content, founded in December 2016 and based in Moscow.[1] In a March 2017 blog post, the studio wrote that the team at the start was "a couple of programmers and artists" and that only the lead developer had previous VR experience. It first prototyped a science fiction space strategy game in which the player commanded an army of fighters and ground-attack aircraft, then after about a month switched to a space action and simulation game built on the existing work, adding a script writer. The post says the project was prepared for Steam Early Access in a little over two months.[11]

In its Early Access notes on Steam, Immergity said the game was "fully playable" but had "some simple bugs and not very detailed space art", and that the full version would fix bugs, add detail to space scenes, rebalance the game based on community reviews and add a Hard mode. It also stated that the price would not change when the game left Early Access.[3] A studio post dated 16 April 2017 announced that Steam had approved and released the game and said the team was preparing a release on the Oculus Store; a post the next day said the manager was writing to Oculus about that release while the programmers worked on an update and the design department chose the studio's next project, a VR game about the ancient world.[12][13] Immergity's other games include Spartan VR, Fixies VR and ZACK: Zombie Attack Shooter.[14]

Release

The Steam page captured on 17 April 2017 listed the game as "AI Rebellion", an Early Access title due on 18 April 2017, for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift with tracked motion controllers in a seated play area.[3] MoguraVR's weekly HTC Vive roundup listed it with an 18 April release date and a price of 1,980 yen, describing it as a space flight action game in which the player investigates an accident at a space station managed by an artificial intelligence.[15] By May 2017 the Steam store name had changed to "AI Rebellion VR"; the game's Steam Community hub, its developer announcements and its Oculus Store listing use the name "AI Rebellion".[16][4][5]

Immergity announced the full release on 2 May 2017 and said it had decided "to reduce the price forever".[4] The archived Steam page showed US$19.99 on 19 May 2017 and US$9.99 by 18 June 2017.[16][17]

The Oculus Store listing placed the game in the store's Gallery section, rated its comfort as "Unrated", and listed it as requiring Oculus Touch, playable seated with front-facing tracking, single user, and a 3.71 GB download, at a price of US$19.99.[5] By August 2018 the listing placed the game in the Games category, and archived copies of the listing show a price of US$9.99 in 2018 and 2020.[18][19] The page is still online as a PC VR listing on the Meta Horizon Store.[20] HTC's July 2018 review stated that the game was available on Viveport and in the Viveport Subscription.[7]

Reception

Joshua Hawkins's review on HTC's Viveport Reviews blog said the game "looks beautiful, and the sensation of flying through space is wonderful", but criticized awkwardly placed controls that left his arms "digging into my sides", combat without "real oomph", ships that all handle alike, and the audio of the robot companion, which he said broke immersion. He concluded that he could not recommend it unless the developers made changes.[7]

On Steam, the user review rating was "Mixed" in archived captures from June 2017 onward, with 66% of 12 reviews positive in June 2017 and 53% of 15 in April 2018.[17][22] As of October 2026 the store page still shows "Mixed", with 53% of 15 user reviews positive.[2]
