The 2017 Google Play Awards were Google's annual awards for apps and games on Android's Google Play store. The ceremony took place during Google I/O on 18 May 2017.[1] There were 12 categories, including separate awards for virtual reality and augmented reality, with five nominees in each of those categories.[2] Virtual Virtual Reality by Tender Claws won Best VR Experience, and WOORLD by Funomena won Best AR Experience.[3]

Event and selection

Google announced the nominees on 24 April 2017 and scheduled the ceremony for 6:30 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time on Thursday, 18 May. Teams from different parts of Google selected nominees in their relevant product areas. The common requirements were high star ratings, technical performance and a launch or major update since April 2016.[2][4]

The 2017 event followed the inaugural Google Play Awards in 2016, which recognized ten apps and games.[5] The winners announcement for the 2017 event is dated 19 May; the ceremony's scheduled local date was 18 May.[2][3]
