Tales Of Glory is a VR-only medieval battle simulator for Windows PCs, developed and published by the independent studio BlackTale Games. The player fights in first person inside large battles against computer-controlled armies, using swords, daggers, polearms, maces, flails, bows and bare fists, rides horses, and gives orders to allied troops. The game also has a sandbox campaign, War of the Five, in which the player fights the five kingdoms to avenge the killing of their family.[1][2]

The game entered Steam Early Access at the end of May 2017 and left Early Access on 30 May 2020, with support for headsets including the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality devices.[3][4] It was made by a solo developer, and UploadVR described it as "basically" the Mount & Blade series "but in VR".[4][5] It was the first game in the Tales Of Glory series, which has since grown to four VR games.[6]

Reviewed 9 October 2026. Checked every cited Steam store, demo and developer news post, BlackTale Games press kit and studio pages, UploadVR 2017 and 2020, MoguraVR, Road to VR and The Outer Haven articles against the claims, prices, dates and figures in this article. About review dates.

Gameplay

Tales Of Glory is a room-scale game played with tracked motion controllers; the Steam listing requires a play area of at least 2 m by 1.5 m and lists it as single-player and "VR Only".[1] The player fights on foot or on horseback inside battles where friendly and enemy soldiers keep arriving on the battlefield. Japanese VR site MoguraVR, describing the June 2017 Early Access build, reported that more than 100 soldiers fight at the same time and that as many as 2,000 soldiers in total keep appearing during a battle; the build had more than 20 medieval weapons, including maces, javelins and bows, horse riding and simple orders for allied troops.[7]

The current Steam description lists 50 battlefields and more than 50 weapons, and says a randomization system gives a different fight each time a level is started. Battles include coastal raids, castle defense, infiltration and convoy attacks, and the game has procedurally generated dungeons.[1][2]

Combat

Melee damage is physically based. In the November 2017 V3 update the developer explained that enemies lose health according to swing force, movement speed, weapon mass and the zone that is hit. The same update added an optional "TOG Mode" in which slow swings do not trigger hit reactions, so the player has to block and swing with intent; the earlier arcade-style behavior stayed available as "Chicken Mode".[8]

In 2020 the developer rewrote the game's physics framework and AI from scratch. The changes added better parrying, shield units that can attack while blocking, a "stabbed" state for enemies with a blade lodged in them, and openings created by hitting an opponent's weapon or shield hard.[9] Later updates added slow-motion "Killmove Combos" triggered by events such as stabbing and dismembering (September 2020), per-material friction on weapon parts and a reworked slicing motion (November 2020), and full collision between enemies and their weapons, so enemies can obstruct each other (December 2021).[10][11][12] A March 2024 build added a new blocking and parrying feature.[13]

VR controls and interaction

Several features are specific to VR play. The July 2017 V1.1.1 update added arm length scaling, a bow with an aiming system that the developer compared to QuiVr, the ability to deflect thrown weapons with a sword, and pickup of weapons and shields from fallen soldiers. It also moved the order system onto a single controller and added voice recognition for unit selection and orders with configurable keywords; this used the Windows 10 Cortana speech service, so it required Windows 10.[14] The V3 update added shield wall, spear wall and archer wall formations with voiced orders.[8]

In October 2018 a beta build moved all controls to the SteamVR 2.0 input system, which let Windows Mixed Reality users bind thumbsticks instead of touchpads and let Oculus users use four buttons instead of two; the developer said Valve's Knuckles controllers were already supported.[15] In December 2018 the game added mixed reality capture support through LIV.[16] A May 2021 option added a "Realistic" two-handed weapon mode, in which both hands have equal influence on the weapon, alongside the default "Action" mode, which is driven mainly by the main hand.[17] The June 2021 update improved grabbing so that enemies can be thrown according to their own velocity and the controller's, and made grabbed enemies collide with other bodies and weapons so they can be used as human shields.[18]

War of the Five campaign

In War of the Five the player recruits an army, gains skills, manages a realm, deals with lords and kings through diplomacy, attacks strongholds and villages, takes part in tournaments and missions to gain fame, and buys gear in shops.[1] In June 2017 the developer described the planned campaign as a "pure sandbox M&B style" mode with some strategy and RPG elements.[19] The campaign's length has been stated differently over time: UploadVR reported the developer's figure of 30 hours at full launch, while the current Steam description says "20+ hours".[4][1]

Development

BlackTale Games is an independent VR studio and the developer and publisher of the Tales Of Glory series. According to the studio, development of the first Tales Of Glory concept began in 2016.[20] The game was made by one developer, who signs posts as "Jay" and has also used the handle "Unityraptor".[3][5] It is built on the Unity engine; a July 2020 update moved it to Unity 2019.4 LTS.[21]

The first build was pushed to Steam on 16 May 2017, and the developer dates the Early Access release to 30 May 2017.[22][3] The launch announcement pointed buyers to a free demo and listed multiplayer as a long-term goal.[23] In June 2017 the developer wrote that the game would "never be a full physic engine based game as Gorn" and that planned multiplayer would be co-op against a computer army.[19] The campaign was named War of the Five in January 2018 and reached the beta branch on 24 March 2019.[24][25] Full physics melee combat later went into an open beta with the campaign on 16 May 2020, and that build became the release version.[22]

After launch the developer kept updating the game while working mainly on the sequel.[3] The May 2021 "3rd TOGniversary" update added procedurally generated dungeons of about 20 rooms and 50 enemies with stealth play and traps, reworked combat AI and physics, and modding tools: a custom texture loader for outfits and banners and a custom weapon loader.[26] Custom textures for outfits, shields, flags and tents had already been added to the beta branch in October 2018.[27] On 12 June 2021 the developer announced official modding support for custom textures, custom weapons through an SDK, and custom scripting, with mods hosted on Nexus Mods.[28] In May 2022 the developer said a full physics team deathmatch mode for 4 vs 4 or 8 vs 8 players should reach the beta branch later that year; in March 2024 multiplayer was still described as being in beta testing.[29][13] The Steam store page still lists the game as single-player.[1] A December 2025 update fixed a problem that stopped Quest users from selecting dialog options with kings and bodyguards.[30]

Reception

In a December 2017 hands-on, UploadVR's David Jagneaux wrote that "there just isn't anything else like Tales of Glory for VR headsets right now", but called the Early Access build "very much like a robust tech demo with a lack of structured content" and warned that lower-spec PCs could stutter or crash. He singled out seeing a catapult hit a castle wall and send enemies flying as ragdolls in VR.[33] When the full version launched, Jagneaux compared it with Blade & Sorcery and wrote that Tales Of Glory "is less about simulating dueling and small group fights and more about cramming as many characters on screen as possible to reenact sieges and mounted combat."[4]

In July 2018 Valve's list of the best-selling VR games on Steam for the year so far placed Tales Of Glory in its Bronze tier, as reported by Road to VR.[34] The developer reported that the game also appeared in the Bronze category of Valve's full-year 2018 Top VR list.[35] On 9 October 2026 Steam showed a "Very Positive" user rating, with about 80 percent of more than 1,000 user reviews positive.[1]
