Shiftall MeganeX Business Edition is an ultra-lightweight, wired PC VR head-mounted display developed by the Japanese company Shiftall, a subsidiary of Panasonic. It was announced on January 4, 2023, as the enterprise-oriented variant of the consumer Shiftall MeganeX, sharing the same compact Micro-OLED optical platform but adding a built-in diopter adjustment mechanism intended to make the headset easy to share among multiple users with different eyesight.[1][2]

After a delay from its originally planned launch, the MeganeX line went on sale in Japan in September 2023 through a lottery system.[3][4] The Business Edition was priced at ¥198,000 (approximately US$1,350 at the time), tax excluded.[4] Unlike the consumer model, it omits the modular SteamVR tracking adapter and relies solely on the headset's built-in optical inside-out tracking.[4]

History and development

Shiftall first teased the MeganeX at CES in January 2022 as part of a trio of metaverse-focused products, positioning it as an ultra-compact and ultra-lightweight VR headset built around Micro-OLED microdisplays.[5] At CES in January 2023 the company split the product into two distinct models: the standard MeganeX, aimed at consumers, and the MeganeX Business Edition, aimed at enterprise and commercial use.[1][2]

Shiftall described the Business Edition as being "designed for typical business use cases" and conceived to be "shared among multiple users" by supporting a diopter adjustment mechanism for each person's eyesight.[1] Whereas the consumer MeganeX uses a forehead pad and a glasses-lens adapter to accommodate vision correction, the Business Edition uses a nose holding pad to make the headset easier to put on and take off, and integrates a hardware diopter dial so that users do not need to wear their own glasses.[1][2]

The launch was repeatedly delayed. Originally slated for early 2023, the release was pushed back to July 2023 following a review of the manufacturing process.[3] Shiftall ultimately launched the MeganeX line quietly in Japan in September 2023 through a lottery system, with the consumer model priced at ¥249,900 (about US$1,700), tax included.[4] A wider United States release slipped into 2024, and pricing for the Business Edition in the US market was never finalized.[4]

In late 2025, Panasonic decided to withdraw from the MeganeX series business as of the end of December 2025, and from 2026 Shiftall assumed full responsibility for the development, sales, and support of the MeganeX product line for both corporate and consumer customers.[6]

Hardware

The MeganeX Business Edition shares its core optics and display hardware with the consumer MeganeX. Each eye is served by an independent 1.3-inch Micro-OLED panel made by Kopin, with a resolution of 2,560 x 2,560 pixels per eye (5,120 x 2,560 pixels combined), a 120Hz refresh rate, a 10-bit color palette, and HDR support.[7][8] The displays are paired with pancake lenses developed by Panasonic, which allow the headset's slim, glasses-like profile.[7][5]

The Business Edition weighs approximately 330 grams without its cable, slightly more than the consumer model's roughly 320 grams.[7] Like the consumer model, it offers an interpupillary distance (IPD) adjustment range of 56-72mm.[7] The defining hardware feature is its built-in diopter adjustment, which spans -7D to 0D for near-sighted users.[7][2]

Tracking is provided by a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR1 processor inside the headset, which drives 6DoF inside-out tracking using onboard cameras.[8] The headset is a wired device that connects to a Windows PC through a converter box, using DisplayPort 1.4 plus USB for video and data, presented to the headset over USB Type-C.[7][8] For audio it carries built-in speakers and dual beamforming microphones, along with a 3.5mm 4-pole jack for wired headphones and microphones.[7]

The most significant difference between the two models is tracking configuration. The consumer MeganeX can be fitted with an optional modular outside-in adapter that adds SteamVR Lighthouse tracking, enabling use with Lighthouse base stations and controllers such as the Valve Index controllers.[8][4] The Business Edition's lower price reflects that it does not include this modular SteamVR tracking unit and instead relies solely on the headset's built-in, less precise optical tracking.[4]

Software and compatibility

The MeganeX Business Edition is a PC VR headset rather than a standalone device, so it does not run its own operating system for applications; the onboard Qualcomm Snapdragon XR1 is used for tracking rather than to run content.[8] The headset is compatible with SteamVR on Windows, allowing it to run the SteamVR catalog of PC VR titles when connected to a suitable computer.[7][8]

Reception

Coverage of the MeganeX line focused on its unusually small size and high pixel density relative to mainstream headsets, while noting Shiftall's repeated delays and limited availability. By early 2024 only a small number of units had shipped in Japan and the headset had not launched in the United States at all, a track record that led commentators to treat the company's later timelines with caution.[9] Reporting also highlighted the connectivity limitations of the platform, including its reliance on a wired DisplayPort connection and a converter box.[10]

Shiftall later moved its focus to higher-resolution successors, announcing the 8K-class Shiftall MeganeX Superlight 8K and, subsequently, the MeganeX 8K Mark II, both of which continued the brand's emphasis on compact, lightweight wired PC VR headsets.[9][6]
