Population: One is a virtual reality battle royale game developed and published by BigBox VR. It was released on October 22, 2020 for the Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift and SteamVR platforms.[1] Each match holds up to 18 players in six squads of three, and the goal is to be the last squad alive on a shrinking map.[2]
The game is built around a vertical combat system in which players can climb any surface, glide across the map, and build walls and platforms during firefights.[3] Meta (then Facebook) acquired BigBox VR in June 2021, and the title was among the first Oculus Quest games to pass US $10 million in revenue.[4][5] It went free-to-play on Quest on March 9, 2023.[6]
Gameplay
Population: One is a first-person battle royale shooter played entirely in VR. In the main mode, 18 players drop onto an island in six squads of three and fight until one squad remains; a contracting boundary forces the surviving squads together over the course of a match.[2] Players scavenge weapons and items from buildings across the map, including assault rifles, submachine guns, pistols, shotguns, sniper rifles and grenades.[7]
The game's defining mechanic is what BigBox VR calls the Vertical Combat System. Players can grab and climb any object, structure or piece of terrain by reaching up and holding the grip button, and an always-equipped glider lets them launch off heights and travel across the map without taking fall damage.[3][7] Players can also build, deploying walls and platforms on the fly to create cover or reach higher ground during fights.[3] Downed teammates can be revived, and eliminated players enter a spectator view of their remaining squadmates.[7]
Cross-play is supported, so Quest and PC VR players, including HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality users, share the same matches.[1] Beyond the standard squads mode, BigBox VR has added rotating modes such as Legions (larger six-player squads) and Team Deathmatch, along with a Sandbox mode that lets players build and play on community-made maps.[6]
Development
Population: One was developed by BigBox VR, a studio based in Seattle, Washington. The team designed the Vertical Combat System specifically for VR, using the medium's room-scale tracking and hand presence to make climbing, gliding and building feel physical rather than mapped to buttons.[3] The studio framed the climbing system as a way to make the whole map navigable in three dimensions, in contrast with flat-screen battle royale games where verticality is limited.[3]
On June 11, 2021, Facebook (later Meta) announced it had acquired BigBox VR, saying the studio would continue as an independent team and that the game would keep being supported on its existing platforms.[4] At the time of the acquisition, Population: One and Onward were among the Oculus Quest titles that had each surpassed US $10 million in revenue, a milestone Meta first cited in February 2021, roughly four months after the game's launch.[4][5] The game uses a seasonal content model with free updates plus paid cosmetic items, including a battle pass, an approach comparable to Fortnite.[4]
After the buyout BigBox VR continued to add maps, modes and seasonal events, and Road to VR's 2025 retrospective on Meta's studio acquisitions noted that the studio had not announced any new project beyond Population: One in the four years since the deal.[8] Support for the original Oculus Quest (Quest 1) ended on October 31, 2022, after which Quest 1 owners could no longer launch the game.[9]
Release
Population: One launched simultaneously on standalone and PC VR headsets on October 22, 2020 at a price of US $29.99.[7][1] On March 9, 2023 it became free-to-play on Quest, while the PC VR version's price was lowered to US $19.99 on the same date; early players received a bundle of cosmetic rewards.[6]

Reception
Population: One drew positive reviews from VR-focused outlets at launch. UploadVR rated it 4 out of 5 in its November 10, 2020 review, calling it an addictive VR shooter built on a strong foundation while noting that content was limited at release.[10] Engadget described it as the best VR battle royale yet.[11] The German site 4Players scored it 81 out of 100, and TheGamer gave it 3.5 out of 5.[12][13]
UploadVR named the game its Best Competitive Multiplayer title in its Best VR Games and Hardware of 2020 list, and Popular Mechanics later named it Best VR Game in its Game and Toy Awards.[14][15] On the Meta Quest Store, the title held a user rating of about 4.3 out of 5 from roughly 17,000 reviews as of 2026.[16]
As of 2026 the game remains available and playable on Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest 3S, Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro and PC VR, though Road to VR reported that its update cadence had slowed by 2025.[8][16]
