The Meta Quest 3 Elite Strap with Battery is an official head strap accessory developed by Meta for its Meta Quest 3 standalone virtual reality headset, and later supported on the Meta Quest 3S. Announced alongside the Quest 3 in late September 2023 and sold from the headset's October 2023 launch, the accessory replaces the soft fabric strap bundled with the headset and adds a rigid frame, a rear adjustment dial, and an integrated battery pack that Meta says provides up to two additional hours of headset use.[1][2] It launched at $129.99 and sits at the top of Meta's first-party comfort accessory range, above the cheaper battery-free Quest 3 Elite Strap.[1][2]

The product became widely known for a charging fault that affected many early units, in which the strap's battery would work briefly and then stop charging the headset or fail to be recognized at all. Meta pulled the accessory from sale in November 2023 to investigate, traced the problem to the strap's firmware, and resumed orders in mid-December 2023 with corrected units while replacing affected straps on a case-by-case basis.[2][3][4]

Background

The Meta Quest 3, announced on September 27, 2023 and released on October 10, 2023, ships with a soft strap made largely of fabric and elastic. As with previous Quest headsets, the bundled strap is inexpensive and packable but is widely criticized for failing to balance the front-heavy headset and for being difficult to tighten securely.[2] To address comfort for longer sessions, Meta offers two first-party rigid replacements: a standard Elite Strap and the Elite Strap with Battery, the latter adding an integrated battery to extend runtime. The pairing mirrors the strategy Meta used on the previous generation with the Quest 2 Elite Strap and its battery variant.[2][1]

When it launched the Elite Strap with Battery was sold as a Quest 3 accessory. After the Meta Quest 3S arrived in October 2024 using the same strap mounting system, Meta marketed the accessory as the "Meta Quest Elite Strap with Battery," compatible with both Quest 3 and Quest 3S.[1]

Design

The Elite Strap with Battery is built around a rigid plastic frame rather than the flexible material of the bundled soft strap. It clasps onto the headset's side struts and wraps around the head, terminating in a contoured rear cradle. A rotary dial mounted at the back tightens and loosens the fit, pulling the cradle snug against the back of the skull so that it bears against the occipital bone for support. By shifting support and counterweight toward the rear, the design offsets the front-heavy mass of the headset and distributes its weight more evenly, reducing pressure on the face and cheeks.[1][5]

The rear cradle uses a wide, soft, oval support that adapts to different head shapes, and reviewers have described the strap as among the most comfortable Meta has made for its headsets.[5] The strap is finished in white, with a rigid plastic frame, a silicone rear head support, and a fabric top strap, and it weighs approximately 331 grams; the cell is housed in the rear cradle, where its mass doubles as a counterweight against the front-heavy headset.[6] The accessory is compatible with Meta's Quest 3 carrying case and with the Quest 3 charging dock, allowing the headset, controllers, and strap to be stored or charged together.[1][6]

Battery and charging

The integrated cell has a capacity of 2,330 mAh. Because the standard Quest 3 lasts only about two hours on its internal battery, Meta states the strap provides up to two additional hours of use, roughly doubling typical runtime.[5][1][4] Independent testing has produced varying figures around that target: MIXED reported reaching roughly four hours of total play when the battery functioned correctly, while UploadVR measured closer to 90 to 120 minutes of extra charge in graphically demanding titles.[5][7]

The strap charges over a USB-C port and supports simultaneous charging, so the headset and the strap battery can be topped up together from a single cable.[1][5]

Charging fault and sales pause

Soon after launch, owners began reporting that the Elite Strap with Battery would charge the Quest 3 for a short time and then stop, with some units no longer being recognized by the headset at all.[2] An informal poll run by Road to VR found that about 43 percent of respondents who owned the strap reported a similar charging problem, and users on Reddit and Meta's community forums documented failures, with some needing more than one replacement.[2] Meta initially acknowledged the issue but cautioned that swapping a faulty unit for a new one might not resolve it, indicating the fault was not limited to individual defective straps.[2][3]

By mid to late November 2023, Meta had removed the accessory from its own store across supported regions, and major retailers including Best Buy, Target, and Amazon showed it out of stock.[2][4] Meta said it was manufacturing a new batch that corrected the firmware behind the fault and would replace affected units on a case-by-case basis for owners who contacted support.[4][3] The episode echoed the earlier Quest 2 Elite Strap, whose rigid frame was prone to cracking and which Meta also pulled and re-released, ultimately extending its warranty.[2]

Meta resumed orders of the corrected strap through its own store on December 14, 2023, with United States orders shipping from around December 19 and European orders from late December.[3] At the time orders resumed they were available only directly from Meta, with third-party retailers restocking afterward. Meta listed a one-year warranty for United States buyers and a two-year warranty for European Union buyers.[3]

Reception

Reviewers consistently praised the comfort and weight distribution of the Elite Strap with Battery while questioning its value, especially in light of the charging troubles. MIXED called it one of the most comfortable straps ever made for a VR headset but described it as overpriced and, given the reliability problems, advised buyers to consider a standard Elite Strap paired with an external power bank instead.[5] UploadVR noted that its 2,330 mAh capacity and roughly $130 price compared unfavorably with third-party battery straps offering larger cells for less money, citing options such as the KIWI Design K4 Boost and the Annapro A3 Max.[7] The recurring verdict across coverage was that the accessory delivered the intended comfort and counterweight benefit, but that its price and the early charging fault undercut its appeal relative to alternatives.[5][7][2]
