The Merge VR Goggles (also marketed as Merge AR/VR Goggles and Merge Headset) are a virtual reality viewer developed by Merge Labs for compatible smartphones. The soft, flexible foam body holds the phone in front of adjustable lenses. Dual input buttons and camera access support interaction with compatible VR and augmented reality applications.[1][8][9]

History and Development

Merge Labs

Merge Labs, Inc. was founded in 2013 in Texas. Its early products included the goggles and Merge Start content directory. On 20 October 2015, it opened Amazon preorders at US$79, promising delivery before the holidays.[1]

A report featuring an interview with co-founder Andrew Trickett dates the viewer's release to November 2015.[2]

Merge announced a US$79.99 price in April 2016 and distribution through GameStop. These historical prices do not describe present stock or pricing.[3]

Education Focus

In 2017, Merge offered classroom sets of certified refurbished goggles at educational pricing.[10]

PTPA Approval

Merge reported a Parent Tested Parent Approved award for the goggles. Its announcement described the product family for ages 10 and above.[10]

Design and Hardware

Soft Foam Construction

The flexible foam construction and adjustable head straps allow the viewer to be shared between users.[1]

In its 2016 review, Tom's Guide described the foam as antimicrobial, without reporting antimicrobial testing.[4]

Physical Specifications

Tom's Guide reported 8.3 x 4.8 x 6.5 inches, larger than its Gear VR comparison, and noted forehead pressure.[4]

Historical records differ: Japanese distributor Links International listed a 180 x 140 x 100 mm body and approximately 400 g. These figures should not be combined into a single uniform specification.[6]

Durability

Adorama listed water and shock resistance. Its care instructions call for removing the phone, spot cleaning with a damp cloth and mild soapy water, and allowing the goggles to air dry. These descriptions do not specify an ingress-protection rating or an unlimited drop guarantee.[7]

Lenses

Adorama listed 42 mm lenses with adjustable spacing and room for eyeglasses.[7]

For HoloGlobe in 2022, Merge announced Automatic Screen Alignment, which repositions the two rendered views as the user adjusts lens spacing. This is a documented application feature rather than a claim that every Cardboard application performs that adjustment.[9]

Augmented Reality Support

Pop-Out AR Window

Removing the front foam insert exposes the phone camera for compatible AR software.[4]

The separate Merge Cube accessory works with compatible phone applications and the goggles. Merge introduced its consumer Cube offering in August 2017.[8]

Input

Dual Trigger Buttons

Two piston buttons at the top touch the inserted phone's screen. They also slide sideways to reposition the lenses. Available actions depend on the application.[6]

Reviewer Jon Walters found that operating the buttons could disturb lens alignment.[11]

Tom's Guide recommended using a Bluetooth gamepad.[4]

Ventilation

Merge described ventilation channels intended to reduce lens fogging.[1]

Phone Compatibility

Size Range

Links International specified phones 123-158 mm tall, while warning that fitting that size range did not guarantee compatibility. This is phone length, not screen diagonal.[6]

Recommended Devices

Walters's review, first published in 2018 and updated in 2020, recorded packaging recommendations for iPhone 6, Galaxy S5, HTC M8 and LG G4 or newer models. These are historical packaging claims, not a compatibility guarantee for later phones or operating systems.[11]

Platform Support

Merge documented Google Cardboard app compatibility in 2016. Software availability and hardware fit are separate requirements.[12]

Content Compatibility

The 2016 review listed YouTube VR, Jaunt VR, VRSE and Discovery VR content.[4]

The manufacturer's VR Start directory curated mobile experiences and assigned age and intensity ratings.[12]

Educational Use

Classroom Ready

The classroom offering emphasized wipe-clean foam, adjustable lenses and left/right input buttons. A product award or classroom marketing does not establish universal suitability for every child.[10]

Merge announced a headset-loan pilot at nine Broward County Library branches in February 2019. Library members could borrow a viewer for use with their own Android or iOS smartphone.[13]

Regional guidance also differed: the Japanese distributor's product notice excluded children under 14.[6]

Merge EDU Platform

HoloGlobe brought NASA and NOAA Earth data into Merge EDU in 2022 and explicitly supported the Merge Headset.[9]

In May 2023, Merge described Headset Mode in Merge EDU apps, using the smartphone camera for full-color passthrough and compositing virtual content over the surrounding scene.[14]

Published research

A 2017 Iowa State University study compared a virtual football game-day experience on a C6 projection system, Oculus Rift DK2, Merge VR and a video control. It involved 82 students, including 22 in the Merge group. The Merge setup used an iPhone 6 Plus, phone inertial sensing and a gamepad for a ten-minute interactive tour. C6 scored higher for realism than Merge. The study found no statistically significant Merge-DK2 differences across its presence categories; that does not establish general hardware equivalence. The noninteractive video used different footage and controls, and the study did not measure actual recruitment success.[5]

A 2021 unblinded randomized trial used Merge VR with a Samsung S9 and a custom Unity preparation application for a simulated MRI scan. The analysis included 84 children aged 4-13, with 30 assigned to VR, 24 to a manual and 30 to a Child Life Program. Success on a six-minute motion-limited simulation was 30%, 50% and 47%, respectively; the group difference was not statistically significant (P=.27). One five-year-old reported blurred vision and eyestrain that lens adjustment did not resolve. This tested the complete preparation intervention, not an isolated headset effect, and did not establish equivalence or outcomes during real clinical MRI scans.[15]
