Kumoon : Ballistic Physics Puzzle is a physics puzzle game with platforming in which a robot knocks over stacks of boxes by bouncing projectiles around a room. It was developed and published by Lucky You Studio and released on Steam for Windows and macOS on 10 November 2015.[1] The base game can be played on a monitor and includes a virtual reality demo of the tutorial and three levels; the separate Kumoon : VR Expansion Kit 01 add-on turns on SteamVR support for the whole game, with the HTC Vive and Oculus headsets supported.[1][2] VR mode is played seated with a gamepad, and the macOS version has no VR support.[1][3]
The game is a remake of a Kumoon that won the Assembly Gamedev Competition in 2005.[4][5] As of October 2026 it is still on sale on Steam at US$2.99, or US$4.99 for the VR Deluxe Edition, and its Steam user reviews are rated "Mixed".[1]
Gameplay
The player controls a robot named Naksu, a box-stacker who is tired of his job and starts knocking the boxes over instead.[4] Each box shows a glowing number for its value, and the value goes up the more times a projectile ricochets around the room before it hits.[4] The Steam listing describes the game as a mix of a shooting gallery, billiards, platforming and puzzle-solving, and calls it nonviolent.[1] Levels also involve wall-climbing, jumps over large gaps, sudden drops and deep pits.[1] In its review, Geeky Hobbies wrote that the game "does a good job blending a shooter with a physics based game".[6]
The game has 3 tutorial levels and 45 regular levels: 15 easy, 15 medium and 15 hard. All levels are unlocked from the start, so players can choose which ones to play.[1] The game can be played in first-person or third-person view, and the robot can use its metal arms to glide slowly down, which helps with platforming.[7] It supports keyboard and mouse or a gamepad; the Steam requirements name the Xbox 360 Gamepad and the Logitech Dual Action.[1]
Virtual reality mode
In VR the game is played in first person. The player aims with head tracking and moves the robot freely with a gamepad, a form of artificial locomotion, rather than with teleportation.[8] The default movement speed is fast; for players who are sensitive to virtual reality sickness, there is a half-speed option, and moving the analog sticks gently gives slower movement.[1] The store page warns that the game "has intense freedom of movement in VR".[1] Update 1.0.14 added warnings to levels that need full speed and to "Extreme" levels with vertigo, angled surfaces or platforming.[9] The add-on's store page names Long Fall, the Spiral Tower and AnsaLattia as levels built to give VR players large views.[2]
Development
The original Kumoon was made by Mikko Oksalahti and won the Assembly Gamedev Competition in 2005. Ricardo Haratani and Tuomas Karmakallio, then students, helped with the project. The studio's website describes the original as a shareware hit with millions of downloads.[4] Haratani founded Lucky You Studio in 2011. In a KeenGamer interview published in November 2015, Haratani said he and Tuomas had talked about rebooting the game about a year and a half earlier. The first plan was a mobile version with new art and levels. After a VR version was suggested, the team bought an Oculus Rift DK2 and set the mobile version aside.[5] Haratani said that mainly two people were working on the game. Tuomas had earlier worked on Minigore and Minigore 2 at Mountain Sheep.[5]
According to the developers, VR affected almost every part of the design, from the menus to gameplay. The options menu, for example, appears inside the game world. They also said that ballistic shooting was hard to get right, and that they tried several character models before finding one that launched projectiles well.[5] The studio's website says Oculus Rift support was "built in from the beginning" and was tested at the Assembly and MängudeÖÖ events in 2015.[4] The soundtrack has music by Myssi, Skaven, Tommi Salomaa, Eraser, Ilmari Tiitinen and Aleksi Eeben.[4] In the interview the team said the Finnish electronic musicians gave their tracks for free or sold them cheaply because the budget was small.[5]
In May 2016 the studio explained why the game was built for a gamepad and seated play. Development had started on the DK2 "a couple of years ago", the game was almost finished when Vive development kits started to come out, and the studio had only recently got an HTC Vive Pre. In the studio's words, "the teleportation mechanic was simply not around when we were making the game", and some levels could not be cleared with basic teleport movement.[3] On 4 May 2016 the studio said it was working on support for tracked controllers.[10] As of October 2026, the Steam requirements still say "Keyboard or gamepad required" for VR.[1]
Release
Kumoon passed Steam Greenlight in 10 days and was released on Steam in November 2015, localized for 25 languages.[4] At launch, Geeky Hobbies listed the price as US$7.99 for the base game plus US$4.99 for VR support.[6] A VR mode guide posted on 2 December 2015 told players to use the Oculus 0.6 runtime in Extended Mode with the Rift set as the primary display.[11] A public SteamVR beta started on 28 January 2016. It needed a gamepad, was tested on the DK2 and the Vive, and listed the DK1, CV1 and OSVR as "theoretically supported".[12] On 31 March 2016, referring to the launch of both consumer headsets, the studio announced SteamVR support for both headsets. VR was kept as a paid add-on to make clear that the game can be played without a headset.[8] The VR Deluxe Edition, which bundles the base game with the VR add-on, was announced on 22 April 2016.[13]

Greg Wamboldt of KeenGamer, who played without a headset, said "the game is beautiful" and praised the soundtrack and the difficulty curve. He found the game "a little too easy" and "somewhat repetitive", and reported an exploit in which players could push resting balls into boxes for extra points.[7] Eric Mortensen of Geeky Hobbies, who did not have a VR headset, called the game unique but said it had been "pretty easy" so far, had little replay value and "could have used a little more of a tutorial".[6] Will Compton of Cubed3 gave it 5 out of 10. He wrote that each puzzle builds on the one before, but found the low difficulty "often leads to a feeling of tedium", that most of the difficulty increase came from box layouts rather than new box types, and called the repetition "a huge stain" on an otherwise interesting idea. He also found the visuals "rather bland".[14]
