IC.IDO, marketed by Keysight as Human Workflow (IC.IDO), is industrial virtual reality software for reviewing product designs and evaluating assembly, maintenance and service operations in a digital mock-up.[1] ESI Group acquired the original developer, IC.IDO GmbH, in 2011.[2]
Engineering workflows

Engineers use IC.IDO to inspect packaging and clearances, try component installation or removal, and examine tools and flexible parts such as cables and hoses. Its human factors tools combine first-person VR evaluation with manikin-based analysis and body tracking for posture, reach and accessibility. Participants can review a shared workspace.[1]
Sessions can contain physics behavior for collision and interference checks, installation paths and device operation. Users can export annotations, change requests, recorded movements and paths from their reviews.[3]
Keysight documents OpenXR integration, with functions dependent on device capabilities. It describes digital mock-ups as reducing reliance on physical prototypes, while acknowledging that not all physical builds can be eliminated.[1]
Product offers and deployment
Keysight lists three product offers within Human Workflow:[1]
| Offer | Documented role |
|---|---|
| IC.IDO Integrate | Authoring, editing and reviewing VR sessions; individual or collaborative product evaluations; physics behavior and review outputs. Its licensed interfaces include desktop-only and desktop plus head-mounted display configurations.[3] |
| IC.IDO Build & Maintain | Adds assembly process definition, process-plan import, assembly bills of material, ergonomics analysis, human motion capture and point-cloud environments. Listed interfaces include desktop-only, desktop plus head-mounted display, and desktop plus Powerwall or CAVE configurations.[3] |
| IC.IDO Weave | Collaborative virtual try-out workspaces for product integration and human-centered process reviews. ESI introduced Weave in May 2023, with access to Integrate, Build & Maintain and the CoLab workspace-hosting offer.[4] |
The release page lists Human Workflow (IC.IDO) 2026.0, dated August 20, 2026, with an installer for 64-bit Windows 11. It requires a license and the Keysight CAE License Management Kit. The release introduces a Keysight DES interface and an anthropometric database for human factors analysis.[3]
History
IC.IDO GmbH and ESI
The original company, IC.IDO GmbH, was founded in 2000 to commercialize research from the Fraunhofer institutes. The name was explained as "I see I do." On August 16, 2011, ESI announced its acquisition of the German company, whose software supported collaborative manipulation of product information and manufacturing or serviceability reviews. ESI described its Visual Decision Platform as an immersive interface for teams working locally or across sites.[2]
IC.IDO 10
ESI announced IC.IDO 10 on April 3, 2014. The release included IDO.Illuminate for lighting in interactive scenes and IDO.Process for planning and validating assembly processes. The announcement described simulation of cables, hoses and kinematic chains, along with libraries of reusable scene elements. Its examples included checking assembly and disassembly sequences, manufacturing and maintenance tooling, and lighting conditions relevant to an operation.[5]
Head-mounted displays
IC.IDO 11, announced on March 28, 2017, was the first version ESI described as built to run on head-mounted displays, alongside existing CAVE, Powerwall and desktop installations. ESI demonstrated it with HTC's Vive Business Edition. Users could manipulate simulated products with hand and arm movements, review assembly tooling and assess accessibility or serviceability. The release also supported participants connecting to the same networked VR session.[6]
Weave
ESI launched IC.IDO Weave on May 11, 2023, for engineering and manufacturing teams working on automotive, aerospace and heavy equipment products. The announcement described shared XR workspaces for assembly line reviews, product integration and service procedures. Weave combined access to the existing IC.IDO offers with CoLab hosting for multi-participant process reviews.[4]
Documented applications
Product and process engineering
ESI's IC.IDO 10 announcement described Renault's use of the software for product and process design. Renault's stated goals included assembly validation, flexible-part and kinematic-chain simulation, manikin manipulation and workflow organization. The announcement presented shorter development times as an objective, rather than reporting a measured reduction.[5]
In an August 2020 account, ESI reported work with industrial truck manufacturer KION Group that began in 2018 at the Fenwick site in Châtellerault, France, and expanded in 2019 to STILL and Linde Material Handling in Germany. The account described production-line and assembly planning, evaluation of maintenance operations, and collaboration between research and development, quality, industrial engineering and service teams. ESI reported deployment at four KION sites in France, Germany and China at that time.[7]
Public demonstration
For a June 8, 2017 event at the Opéra de Rennes, ESI announced an IC.IDO model of the opera house developed with Excelcar. The planned headset sessions were intended to let visitors explore the auditorium and backstage areas at real scale, including viewpoints from seats and the stage. The announcement described a public architectural demonstration alongside the software's industrial applications.[8]
