Holopoint is a virtual reality archery wave shooter developed and published by Alzan Studios, LLC. It was released for Microsoft Windows on Steam on April 4, 2016, as a SteamVR title.[1] The player uses a tracked bow and arrow to fight through escalating waves of holographic targets and enemies that shoot back, which requires the player to move, duck, and turn to avoid incoming projectiles. The game was designed for the HTC Vive with 360-degree room-scale tracking and also runs on other SteamVR headsets.[2]
A standalone version, Holopoint: Oculus Edition, was released for the Oculus Quest on September 10, 2020, and a follow-up, Holopoint: Chronicle, was released on Steam on January 31, 2019.[3][4]
Gameplay
Holopoint is a single-player wave shooter played with tracked motion controllers, where one controller represents the bow and the other draws and nocks arrows.[1] The player stands in a dojo and shoots at holographic cubes and humanoid figures, including samurai and ninja enemies, drawing, nocking, and releasing arrows as quickly as possible.[1][5] When a target is hit it fires a projectile back at the player before disappearing, so the player must continually turn, duck, and step aside to avoid being struck.[5][6] Taking three hits ends the run, and a checkpoint system allows the player to restart at set points.[5]
Progression is based on player skill rather than unlockable items.[7] The Original mode contains 60 waves whose difficulty increases as play continues, and a separate Time-Trial mode is also included.[1][8] Because of the constant movement, turning, and dodging the game requires, reviewers have described it as a physically demanding workout that can leave players sweating and, in longer sessions, dizzy or nauseous.[5]
Development and release
Holopoint was developed and published by Alzan Studios, LLC and released on Steam on April 4, 2016.[1] The developer designed the game for the HTC Vive with a 360-degree room-scale play space. According to Alzan Studios, the Oculus Rift is also supported but is not regularly tested by the studio; Rift play requires Touch controllers, and the studio noted that single-sensor tracking is not supported while two-sensor tracking is not reliable enough for the fast-paced gameplay.[2] As a SteamVR title the game is also compatible with later headsets such as the Valve Index.[1]
Alzan Studios released a follow-up, Holopoint: Chronicle, on Steam on January 31, 2019, set on an island and built around the same archery combat.[4] On September 10, 2020, the studio released Holopoint: Oculus Edition as a standalone version for the Oculus Quest, removing the cabling of PC VR so players could turn and move freely.[3][5]
Reception
On Steam, Holopoint holds a "Very Positive" review summary, with 89% of 686 user reviews being positive as of June 2026.[1] UploadVR reviewed the Oculus Quest version in September 2020, scoring it 3 out of 5 and describing it as one of the most physically demanding experiences in VR, an effective workout that is best played in short bursts because extended sessions can cause dizziness and nausea.[5] On the Meta Store, the Quest version holds a 4.2 out of 5 user rating across 292 reviews.[7]
