Felix & Paul Studios is a Canadian immersive entertainment and Virtual Reality production studio based in Montreal, Quebec. It was founded in 2013 by directors Félix Lajeunesse and Paul Raphaël together with producer Stéphane Rituit, and it produced cinematic 3D 360-degree and immersive experiences using camera systems the studio designed and built itself.[1][2] The studio ceased commercial operations in mid-August 2026, laid off nearly all of its employees, and made an assignment in bankruptcy on 10 September 2026, with Deloitte Restructuring Inc. acting as trustee.[3] On 17 September 2026 the Superior Court of Quebec authorized the sale of the studio's Space Explorers franchise and its lunar 3D 360-degree camera technology for US$350,000 to 18201714 Canada Inc., a newly formed company of former executives and employees.[4][5]
The studio has won three Emmy Awards. It took a 2016 Daytime Emmy for the Cirque du Soleil collaboration Inside the Box of Kurios, a 2017 Primetime Emmy for the White House tour The People's House, and a 2021 Primetime Emmy for Space Explorers: The ISS Experience, a multi-part documentary series filmed aboard the International Space Station.[6][7][8] In its later years the studio moved much of its work into location-based VR, with the touring Space Explorers: THE INFINITE and the Las Vegas attraction Interstellar Arc.[9]
History
Lajeunesse and Raphaël both studied film at Concordia University in Montreal and began working together after their studies, co-directing a low-budget animated music video for the Montreal musician Akido that was released around 2004.[1][10] Before turning to virtual reality the pair directed music videos and commercials for brands such as Adidas, Coca-Cola, and Volkswagen, and worked on large-scale immersive installations, including content for the Canada Pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai with Cirque du Soleil.[1]
Their move into VR began in 2013, when Raphaël showed Lajeunesse an Oculus Rift development kit from the headset's Kickstarter campaign.[1] The studio was incorporated in Montreal in 2013, with Rituit, a producer who had begun his career on Inuit community films and documentaries, joining as the third co-founder and chief executive.[2][10] Felix & Paul Studios debuted its first cinematic VR work, Strangers with Patrick Watson, a stereoscopic 360-degree film of the Canadian musician performing, at South by Southwest in 2014; Oculus then added the piece to its official exhibit.[1][2]
An early piece, an "Introduction to VR" experience, was bundled with the Samsung Gear VR when it launched, alongside Strangers.[11] In July 2015 the studio signed a multi-project content deal with Oculus, whose parent Facebook (now Meta) distributed its experiences through the Gear VR and later headsets; it was reported at the time as one of the largest live-action VR production deals to date.[1][12] Over the following years it built a catalogue spanning fiction, documentary, music, and brand collaborations, and expanded from headset-delivered VR into large-scale location-based installations.[1][10]
Space Explorers, augmented reality and location-based VR (2021-2025)
Space Explorers: THE INFINITE, a walk-through location-based adaptation of the ISS footage created with Montreal's PHI Studio and produced by Infinity Experiences, was created in 2021 and toured North America, Europe and Asia; by early 2026 the studio said it had drawn more than half a million visitors, in cities including Houston, Seattle/Tacoma, Vancouver, Denver, Toronto, Shanghai and Singapore.[9][13][14] The studio kept adding episodes to the home-headset Space Explorers series on Meta Quest. Space Explorers: Apollo to Artemis, guided by former NASA flight director Gene Kranz, was released on 5 May 2023.[15] At the 2023 Venice International Film Festival, Space Explorers: Blue Marble - Orbit 1, filmed outside the station, was one of ten projects chosen as "Best of Immersive" in the Venice Immersive section, and the studio's augmented reality storybook Jim Henson's The Storyteller: The Seven Ravens, narrated by Neil Gaiman, was selected to premiere in competition.[16] The full three-episode Blue Marble trilogy followed in September 2023.[17]
On 13 February 2024 the studio announced financing from Export Development Canada, BDC, the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC) and National Bank of Canada's Creative Industries Group for what it called its largest production to date, a location-based VR experience built on new intellectual property.[9] That project became Interstellar Arc, whose groundbreaking announcement credited the same four lenders.[18] Construction began at the AREA15 entertainment district in Las Vegas on 2 December 2024, in a custom-built venue of 20,000 square feet; Rituit said at the time that the project had been in development for more than two years.[18] Tickets went on sale on 28 July 2025, starting at US$54 for adults and US$39 for children aged 8 to 12, and the attraction opened on 22 October 2025.[19][20]
Closure and bankruptcy (2026)
According to the trustee's report to the court, the studio's revenue was US$2.336 million in 2024, US$3.144 million in 2025 and US$3.164 million in the first seven months of 2026, against net losses of US$5.488 million, US$7.655 million and US$6.075 million over the same periods (US$19.2 million in total).[3] The trustee's motion to the court gives slightly higher loss figures, totalling about US$20.3 million.[4] The company attributed its difficulties to accumulated losses in its production studio, slower than expected revenue growth from Interstellar Arc, delays to two lunar missions it was taking part in, and the cancellation of a major project in June 2026, which limited its ability to raise financing.[3][4]
With Deloitte's assistance the studio launched a sale and investment solicitation process on 14 July 2026. Solicitation documents went to 76 potential buyers and investors, 51 of whom signed confidentiality agreements, but no binding offer arrived by the 28 July 2026 deadline. The only non-binding offer proposed no cash payment to creditors and was withdrawn on 9 August 2026 because of the cash needed to restart operations.[3] The studio then ceased commercial operations in mid-August and dismissed nearly all of its staff on 17 August 2026. The trustee's reports put the workforce at about 46 people, while the trustee's motion gives about 75.[3][4] Reports of the closure first appeared on 18 and 19 August, based on employees' public posts, before the company had made any statement.[21][22] The VR Collective reported that ticket sales for Interstellar Arc stopped on 18 August 2026.[23]
The company made an assignment of its property under Canada's Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act on 10 September 2026, and Deloitte Restructuring Inc. agreed to act as trustee the same day.[5] Its books showed total liabilities of US$34.459 million and assets with a net book value of US$22.055 million at 31 July 2026. The trustee judged most of those assets to be worth little or nothing in a forced liquidation, including the productions carried as intangible assets.[5] The trustee's 28 September report listed the secured creditors as Export Development Canada, Investissement Québec, National Bank of Canada, BDC Capital and SODEC.[5][24]
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 14 July 2026 | Sale and investment solicitation process launched with Deloitte[3] |
| 28 July 2026 | Deadline for binding offers passes with none received[3] |
| 9 August 2026 | Only non-binding offer withdrawn[3] |
| 17 August 2026 | Nearly all employees dismissed; commercial operations had ceased in mid-August[3] |
| 10 September 2026 | Assignment in bankruptcy; Deloitte Restructuring Inc. appointed trustee[5] |
| 11 September 2026 | Trustee and secured creditors select the former shareholders' and employees' offer[5] |
| 14 September 2026 | Trustee asks the court to approve the sale before the first meeting of creditors[4] |
| 17 September 2026 | Superior Court of Quebec authorizes the sale to 18201714 Canada Inc.[5] |
| 28 September 2026 | Scheduled first meeting of creditors; trustee's preliminary report states the US$350,000 was received[5][4] |
The assets sold were two linked groups: the space-qualified 3D 360-degree camera technology (designs, software, firmware and know-how) and the Space Explorers intellectual property, whose value the motion tied to location-based distribution through Infinity Experiences, home VR distribution agreements with Meta, dome and planetarium distribution through Hubblo, and new lunar content then being funded by Meta.[4] The trustee argued that waiting 21 days for the creditors' meeting risked losing the five engineers who had designed the cameras and the lunar mission slots, and that the transaction would preserve those five specialized engineering jobs and keep the capability in Canada.[4][3] The trustee expected the price to cover the transaction's professional fees and repay a small part of the secured debt, leaving nothing for unsecured creditors.[5]
Technology
Felix & Paul Studios designs and builds its own 3D 360-degree camera systems rather than using off-the-shelf hardware, and iterates the design across multiple generations to suit the needs of each production.[1][25] The cameras capture stereoscopic (3D) imagery across a full 360-degree field so that a viewer in a headset can look in any direction while the scene plays out around them.[25] In 2017 the studio agreed to integrate Fraunhofer's upHear spatial audio technology into its next-generation camera system.[26] Its sound division, Headspace Studio, was co-founded by Jean-Pascal Beaudoin and established in 2015; the studio describes it as dedicated to spatial and immersive audio for VR, AR, dome and large-scale physical installations.[27]
For filming in orbit the studio developed a hardened "Outer Space Camera", a customized Z-Cam V1 Pro with nine 4K sensors that records a 3D, 360-degree image at 8K resolution. The unit used custom lenses rated for an operating range of roughly -250 to +250 degrees Fahrenheit and could store about 15 hours of footage. Nanoracks hardened the equipment against vacuum, radiation, and micrometeoroids, and the camera was mounted on the station's Canadarm2 robotic arm to shoot scenes outside the International Space Station.[28] The studio described itself as the only media company recognized as an Official Implementation Partner by the ISS U.S. National Laboratory.[27]
Over several years the studio also developed 3D 360-degree camera systems designed to work on the surface of the Moon, with support and participation from the Canadian Space Agency and Meta. According to the trustee's September 2026 motion, the cameras were being integrated into two lunar missions, one with Astrobotic scheduled to launch in November 2026 and one with Intuitive Machines scheduled for December 2026, and those flights were meant to raise the technology from technology readiness level 6 to level 7. The same filing said the Canadian Space Agency wanted to transfer its contract to the buyer of the technology.[4]

Space Explorers: The ISS Experience
Space Explorers: The ISS Experience is a four-part immersive documentary series produced by Felix & Paul Studios in association with TIME Studios and filmed aboard the International Space Station. Planning began around 2015, and footage was captured over roughly two years with access to the station crew.[8][28] The series follows eight astronauts, including David Saint-Jacques, Christina Koch, Jessica Meir, Anne McClain, and Victor Glover, and its later episodes used the Outer Space Camera to record the first 3D, 360-degree scenes shot outside the station.[28] It won the Emmy for Outstanding Interactive Program at the 73rd Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards in 2021, the studio's third Emmy.[8] A reworked Ultimate Edition, with optimized 8K visuals, mixed-reality interactions, and a new "Mission to the Moon" chapter on NASA's Artemis program, was released on November 3, 2025 for Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S.[29] The Ultimate Edition also added a redesigned navigation system that uses hand gestures instead of controllers.[29] The Space Explorers franchise passed to 18201714 Canada Inc. in the September 2026 asset sale.[5]
Awards
The studio's three Emmy wins span both the Daytime and Primetime branches. Inside the Box of Kurios, made with Cirque du Soleil Media, won a 2016 Daytime Emmy in the Outstanding Interactive Media category.[6] The People's House won the 2017 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Original Interactive Program at the 69th Emmy Awards.[7][30] Space Explorers: The ISS Experience won the 2021 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Interactive Program.[8][31] The series has also been recognised elsewhere: its first episode won a 2021 Webby Award in the science and education category, along with a People's Voice Award for best VR video.[32]
Other honours listed by the studio include a 2017 Peabody Futures of Media Award and a 2018 Canadian Screen Award for Miyubi, a 2019 Primetime Emmy nomination for Traveling While Black, and the 2026 Auggie Award for Best Location-Based Entertainment, presented at Augmented World Expo, for Interstellar Arc.[27]
Current status
As of October 2026 Felix & Paul Studios is in bankruptcy. It has not operated commercially since mid-August 2026, two employees remained on its payroll at the time of the bankruptcy, and all of its property is held by the trustee.[5] The trustee reported on 28 September 2026 that ordinary (unsecured) creditors are not expected to receive any distribution, because secured claims far exceed the value of the assets.[5] The Space Explorers franchise and the lunar camera technology now belong to 18201714 Canada Inc., the company set up by a group of former shareholders, executives and employees.[5][4][24]
Before the closure the studio had shifted much of its focus toward large-scale, location-based immersive attractions alongside headset-based releases.[10] Its touring installation Space Explorers: THE INFINITE, co-produced with Montreal's PHI Studio, presented the ISS footage as a walkable group experience.[2] In 2026 it opened in Mississauga, Ontario, on 5 March as a 45-minute free-roaming experience presented by VIBRANT Studios, and at Pullman Yards in Atlanta from 27 March.[13][14] The studio's largest project, Interstellar Arc, opened at the AREA15 entertainment complex in Las Vegas on October 22, 2025.[20][33] The location-based experience runs about 60 minutes inside a custom-built venue of roughly 20,000 square feet, casting guests as travellers who wake from cryogenic sleep 262 years into a voyage toward the fictional exoplanet Arcadia.[34] The trustee's reports do not say what will happen to the attraction.[5]
