Shadow Creator (full name Shadow Creator Information Technology Co., Ltd.) is a Chinese company that designs augmented reality and mixed reality head-mounted displays. It was founded in Shanghai in 2014 by Sun Li, who goes by Victor Sun and serves as the company's chairman and chief executive.[1][2] The company builds both the hardware and the software for its glasses and has positioned itself as a supplier of complete mixed reality solutions rather than a maker of components alone.[3]
Shadow Creator has been described by industry analysts as one of the leaders in extended reality in China and as one of the main XR partners of Qualcomm, whose Snapdragon mobile chips power most of the company's devices.[3] Its best-known product, the Action One headset, was adopted heavily by the Chinese education sector: the company said in 2020 that it had shipped 40,000 Action One units to 400 schools across China.[3]
History
Shadow Creator was established in Shanghai in 2014.[1][2] Founder Victor Sun came from the games industry: he had earlier started the gaming venture Snailcolor in 2010 and sold it for a reported 150 million yuan before turning to wearable computing and the development of holographic glasses.[1] Sun has also been affiliated with Microsoft's startup programs as a mentor and angel investor.[1]
The company's first widely covered product was the Action One, a standalone AR headset shown at CES Asia 2018 and released the following year.[2] Shadow Creator subsequently moved toward smaller, glasses-style form factors with the JIMO and Action Air, both of which dropped from a visor design toward something closer to eyewear while keeping on-board computing.[3][4]
In October 2020, Shadow Creator announced a partnership with PhotonLens, a UK-based AR smart glasses startup. Under the deal, PhotonLens acted as co-designer and global distributor for a device that Shadow Creator called Honghu domestically and that was marketed internationally as the Photons; the arrangement was structured as an original design manufacturer (ODM) partnership.[5][6] Victor Sun said the collaboration marked "a new era for us as we seek to create a truly consumer-ready AR device."[6]
Technology
Shadow Creator's headsets are standalone devices: they carry their own processor, memory, and battery rather than relying on a tethered phone or PC.[2][4] The early Action One used a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip with two 720p OLED microdisplays, while later glasses such as the JIMO and Action Air moved to the Snapdragon 845, and the Honghu/Photons used the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 platform built specifically for extended reality.[2][3][4][5] The company's devices run a custom Linux-based operating system marketed as "Blue Cat."[2][4]
For positional tracking the glasses use SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) with outward-facing cameras, giving inside-out six degrees of freedom without external base stations.[2][6] Input methods across the lineup have included handheld controllers, hand-gesture recognition, and voice commands; the Honghu/Photons added a pair of wireless 6DoF controllers with a concealed tracking light ring and support for a wide range of hand gestures.[2][6]
Products
Shadow Creator's catalog has centered on standalone AR and MR headsets and glasses aimed at both consumers and enterprise or education customers.

Market position
Analysts have grouped Shadow Creator among China's leading extended reality firms and noted its close ties to Qualcomm as an early adopter of successive Snapdragon XR chipsets.[3] Unlike the tethered display glasses popularized by rivals such as Xreal (formerly Nreal), Shadow Creator concentrated on self-contained headsets that resembled Microsoft HoloLens in form and ambition, then worked to shrink that approach into lighter eyewear.[4][2] The company found its clearest traction in the education market in China, where its Action One headsets were deployed for holographic classroom and shared-lecture use cases, with the company reporting 40,000 units shipped to 400 schools by 2020.[3]
