The BOBOVR M2 Pro is a battery head strap accessory for the Meta Quest 2 virtual reality headset, manufactured by the Chinese accessory maker BOBOVR. Released in 2021, it pairs a rigid halo-style head strap with a removable, magnetically attached battery pack mounted at the back of the head. The strap is built to redistribute the headset's weight off the user's face and onto the forehead and crown, while the rear battery acts as a counterweight that both balances the device and roughly doubles the Quest 2's untethered play time. The battery pack carries a 5200 mAh cell and adds about two to three hours of use per charge, and because it detaches magnetically it can be hot-swapped for a fresh pack without powering down the headset.[1][2]

The M2 Pro became one of the most widely sold third-party head straps for the Quest 2, and Android Central described BOBOVR as having been "the go-to name for Quest 2 head straps for years."[2] It is the battery-equipped successor to the company's earlier non-battery BOBOVR M2 halo strap, and it was later succeeded by the BOBOVR M3 Pro for the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S.[3][4]

Background

The Meta Quest 2 (originally the Oculus Quest 2) ships with a soft elastic strap that holds the headset against the wearer's face. Many users find that the stock strap concentrates the headset's weight on the cheekbones and the bridge of the nose, which can become uncomfortable during longer sessions, and the small internal battery limits standalone play to roughly two to three hours. A market of aftermarket "halo" or "elite" straps grew to address both problems by transferring weight to a rigid cradle around the head and, in some cases, by adding an external battery. The BOBOVR M2 Pro was BOBOVR's answer in that category, building on the firm's original M2 halo strap by integrating a swappable rear battery.[2][3]

Design

The M2 Pro uses a halo design: a semi-rigid band that wraps around the head, with a padded rest at the front that sits on the forehead and a contoured cradle at the back of the skull. A dial on the rear of the band tightens or loosens the fit. BOBOVR states the strap has five adjustment points so it can be sized to different head shapes, and reviewers note that the company added extra hinges to the band that act like a fulcrum, lifting the headset off the face so it does not press down when the user looks around.[1][2] Android Central observed that this halo approach leaves room for larger over-ear headphones, but also that it can slightly reduce the headset's field of view compared with straps that pull the lenses closer to the eyes.[2]

The strap's stressed components use a polymer chosen for toughness to reduce the risk of cracking. The battery pack mounts on the rear of the band, directly above the adjustment dial, and snaps into place magnetically; small LEDs on the back of the pack indicate the remaining charge.[5][2] Placing the battery at the back is deliberate: it offsets the forward weight of the Quest 2's optics and screen so the overall package feels more balanced on the head.[1][2]

Battery and power

The removable battery used by the M2 Pro is BOBOVR's B2 pack, a 5200 mAh lithium-ion module that weighs about 140 grams.[1][4] BOBOVR rates a single pack at roughly two to three additional hours of Quest 2 play time, approximately one full recharge of the headset.[1][5] Charging the pack over USB-C takes about two hours to reach 80 percent, at up to 15 watts.[4] The strap also exposes a USB Type-C port that can deliver passthrough power to other accessories.[1][5]

The defining feature is the magnetic quick-release. Because the pack is held on only by magnets and a magnetic power connector, a depleted battery can be pulled off and a charged one snapped on while the headset stays on and powered, an arrangement BOBOVR markets as effectively unlimited play time. The second battery is sold separately, and the same B2 pack is cross-compatible with BOBOVR's M1, M2 and M3 strap families (though not the S3 Pro).[1][4][2]

Reception

Reviewers generally praised the M2 Pro for its comfort and for solving the Quest 2's short battery life. Pojo's review gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars, highlighting the easy magnetic battery swaps and the way the halo strap takes pressure off the face.[6] The rear battery's role as a counterweight was repeatedly cited as making the headset feel better balanced than the stock strap.[1][2]

Criticism centered on the trade-offs of the halo style. In a head-to-head comparison, Android Central preferred the competing GeekVR Q2 Pro, finding it more stable on the head and noting that the M2 Pro's design slightly narrowed the field of view and could shift when the wearer moved quickly. Even so, the same review credited BOBOVR with the larger accessory ecosystem and a long track record in the category.[2]
