Acer (Acer Inc.) is a Taiwanese multinational electronics company best known for personal computers, monitors, and gaming hardware. It was founded on August 1, 1976 as Multitech Electronics by Stan Shih, his wife Carolyn Yeh, and a small group of partners, and adopted the Acer name in 1987.[1] The company is headquartered in the Xizhi District of New Taipei City, Taiwan, and is consistently ranked among the world's largest personal computer vendors by unit sales.[1] In the virtual reality and augmented reality space, Acer is most notable for two Windows Mixed Reality headsets it built for Microsoft in 2017 and 2018, and more recently for its glasses-free Stereoscopic 3D SpatialLabs display technology.[2][3][4]
History
Acer began in 1976 as Multitech Electronics, a small Taiwanese firm that distributed electronic parts and consulted on microprocessor technology before moving into personal computer manufacturing. The company was renamed Acer in 1987 and grew into one of the largest PC makers in the world, expanding through acquisitions such as the 2007 purchase of Gateway and its eMachines brand.[1] By the mid-2020s Acer remained among the top global PC vendors by unit sales, with operations in more than 160 countries.[1][3]
Acer's involvement in immersive computing began in 2017, when Microsoft recruited a group of established PC makers, Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, and Samsung, to build the first wave of Windows Mixed Reality headsets to a common reference design. Acer's was among the earliest to ship and became one of the most visible models in the lineup because of its low price and distinctive blue housing.[2][5] A year later Acer followed up with a more refined, modular headset, the OJO 500, before the broader Windows Mixed Reality platform wound down. Acer then shifted its immersive efforts toward glasses-free 3D displays under the SpatialLabs brand.[3][4]
Windows Mixed Reality headsets
The original Acer Windows Mixed Reality Headset (model AH101) launched as a Developer Edition on August 1, 2017 at 299 US dollars, with a consumer bundle that added motion controllers arriving alongside the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update in October 2017 for around 399 US dollars.[6][2] It used two 2.89-inch LCD panels at 1440 by 1440 pixels per eye, a refresh rate of up to 90Hz, and a field of view of roughly 95 to 100 degrees.[6][2] Like the rest of the Windows Mixed Reality family, it relied on Inside-out tracking from two front-mounted cameras and needed no external sensors, connecting to a Windows 10 PC through a single tethered cable carrying HDMI 2.0 and USB 3.0.[6][2] Reviewers praised the simple setup and light, comfortable design with a flip-up visor, but criticised the small software library and the bundled controllers, whose large tracking rings could bump into each other.[2][7]
The Acer OJO 500, announced on August 29, 2018 at IFA in Berlin and sold in North America from November 2018 starting at 399 US dollars, was Acer's second and more ambitious headset.[3][8] It kept the dual 2.89-inch LCD panels and 100-degree field of view but emphasised a modular design: the head strap and lens could be detached and swapped, with hard and washable soft strap options.[3][8] Distinctive features included a patented "sound pipe" audio system that channelled sound from built-in speakers toward the ears without separate headphones, a hardware IPD adjustment wheel paired with an Acer IPD Meter app, and full six-degrees-of-freedom inside-out tracking with optional motion controllers.[3][9]

|---|---|---|---|
| Acer Windows Mixed Reality Headset (AH101) | 2017 | Tethered VR headset | Microsoft Windows Mixed Reality reference design; dual 2.89-inch LCD, 1440x1440 per eye, up to 90Hz, ~95-100 degree FOV; inside-out tracking; Dev Edition 299 US dollars (Aug 2017), consumer bundle with controllers ~399 US dollars (Oct 2017)[6][2] |
| Acer OJO 500 (AH501) | 2018 | Tethered VR headset | Modular detachable strap and lens; dual 2.89-inch LCD, 2880x1440 combined, up to 90Hz, 100 degree FOV; 6DoF inside-out tracking; sound-pipe audio; hardware IPD wheel; from 399 US dollars[3][8] |
| SpatialLabs (ConceptD 7, Predator Helios, View monitors) | 2021 onward | Glasses-free stereoscopic 3D displays | Eye-tracking plus lenticular optics and real-time rendering; first shipped on the ConceptD 7 SpatialLabs Edition laptop; later Predator Helios 300 SpatialLabs Edition and SpatialLabs View monitors[4][10] |
SpatialLabs
After the Windows Mixed Reality era, Acer's immersive work centred on SpatialLabs, a glasses-free stereoscopic 3D technology aimed at creators, developers, and gamers rather than head-mounted Mixed Reality. Acer first teased SpatialLabs in May 2021 and shipped it on the ConceptD 7 SpatialLabs Edition laptop, announced in October 2021.[4][11] The system combines an eye-tracking stereo camera, a lenticular stereoscopic display, and real-time rendering so that a single viewer sees a 3D image without wearing glasses.[10][12]
Acer expanded the SpatialLabs lineup over the following years, bringing the technology to the gaming-focused Predator Helios 300 SpatialLabs Edition laptop in 2022 and to standalone monitors. The SpatialLabs View Pro 27, a 27-inch 4K display for professionals, was announced in October 2023, and at CES in January 2024 Acer added the Aspire 3D 15 SpatialLabs Edition laptop and the Predator SpatialLabs View 27 gaming monitor.[10][12][13] Acer pairs the displays with software such as SpatialLabs TrueGame, which converts supported games into glasses-free 3D using pre-configured profiles, with Acer saying more titles are added every month.[10]
Market position
Acer occupies a niche in virtual and augmented reality rather than a leading role. Its two Windows Mixed Reality headsets were budget entries in a Microsoft-led platform that did not achieve lasting consumer traction, and Microsoft itself later deprecated the Windows Mixed Reality software.[2][9] Acer has not released a standalone VR or AR headset of its own, and its current immersive products focus on glasses-free 3D screens for creators and gamers under the SpatialLabs brand instead of wearable displays.[4][10] The company remains far better known for mainstream PCs, monitors, and its Predator gaming line than for headset hardware.[1]
