The PlayStation VR (PS VR or PSVR) is a virtual reality head-mounted display developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. Originally revealed as "Project Morpheus" in March 2014 and released on October 13, 2016 at $399, PlayStation VR features a 5.7-inch OLED display at 1920 x 1080 resolution, 96-degree field of view, and 90/120 Hz refresh rate. The headset uses the PlayStation Camera and nine positional LEDs for 360-degree head tracking, and supports DualShock 4, PlayStation Move, and PS VR Aim controllers.[1]
History and Development
Project Morpheus
Sony revealed the VR headset as "Project Morpheus" at GDC in March 2014.
PlayStation VR Branding
The headset was officially named PlayStation VR in September 2015.
October 2016 Launch
PlayStation VR released October 13, 2016 for $399.
PlayStation 5 Compatibility
PS VR is forward compatible with PS5 using a camera adapter.
Successor
PlayStation VR2 was announced and released for PS5 in 2023.
