Meta Platforms is a technology company based in Menlo Park, California. It was founded as a social networking service by Mark Zuckerberg known as Facebook. It renamed to Meta Platforms in 2021.
It has owned Oculus VR, the maker of Oculus Rift devices, since March 25, 2014, after it purchased Oculus for 2 billion dollars. The deal included 400 million dollars in cash and 23.1 million shares of Facebook stock, valued at 1.6 billion dollars. An additional 300 million dollars were allocated when Facebook reaches certain goals.
It is not to be confused with Meta, the company that made the Meta 1 and Meta 2 augmented reality headsets.
