Of all the games that have come out in the past year, Superhot is the one that surprised me the least of being designed for VR; with part of the reason being down to the story, which is something I’ll delve into a little bit in just a moment. For the time being, I’m going to quickly get this out the way and describe the game as a first-person action game, that you could technically call a shooter – within limits!

==Description==
Blurring the lines between cautious strategy and unbridled mayhem, SUPERHOT VR is the definitive VR FPS in which time moves only when you move. No regenerating health bars. No conveniently placed ammo drops. It's just you, outnumbered and outgunned, grabbing the weapons of fallen enemies to shoot, slice, and maneuver through a hurricane of slow-motion bullets.


Back onto the story: the reason it makes sense for the game to be in a VR perspective is thanks to the way the game is told and conveyed, with the start of the game showing you quite clearly that you’ve put on a VR headset to get into the “program” known only as Superhot. Primarily the story is told through chatrooms that the game forces you to “type” in to get extra little segments about the story to reveal to you as the player what’s going on. With the way the story was told originally (without a VR headset) it did a good job of simulating what it would be like in this specific environment, but in a VR setting I feel the game manages to reveal to the player exactly what the developers were going for in this game. At first, the story seems pretty basic and not all that descript, but after you start making your way through some of the levels, the game really opens up to the meat of the story and it will keep you gripped all the way unto the end!


Gameplay is what you can expect from a VR FPS game, where you look around with the headset and move around with the Oculus Touch. It’s not the controls that make the game what it is; it’s the gameplay that does. A good description of the gameplay would be like watching an awesome action-movie, where every individual was killed in new, interesting, and stylised ways that were all different from the last onscreen kill – imagine that then you’ve got this game in a pretty basic nutshell.


Unfortunately, unlike in the movies, if you receive a single hit then you will die, but that is also in place for your opponents; with a couple of exceptions here and there. To prevent things from becoming incredibly difficult and challenging, the world around you becomes slowed-down and won’t speed up until you as the player decide to move; which in-turn causes the enemies around you to speed up along with that – including any weapons that they may be trying to murder you with.

After a little while of getting to grips with everything, you’ll understand how the basic premise of the game works and you will manage to complete your very first level. Once you’ve managed to kill everyone on the level, you’ll be treated to how you’ve beaten the level in real-time, with no slow-motion to get in the way; showing you what it would be like in an action movie that you’re starring in!

Aesthetically, the game makes use of a simple and polygonal look to its graphics that is very simple in colour, but turns out to be absolutely necessary to how the game looks and feels. Basically, if you recall the art-style that Mirror’s Edge had originally gone for, then you can imagine it perfectly in this game. Everything that is a physical object in the world that you can use is a distinctly dark colour, whereas everything you can move on is pure white, with a few distinctions here and there for the added depth; and to make sure you don’t get messed up on who to kill, you have a cornucopia of red-coloured individuals that are your targets. While this all may seem fairly simple on first glance, it is actually perfectly designed, as it doesn’t distract from the player too much and after looking around your environment for a brief second you would already know exactly what you could use to your advantage.

Overall, Superhot VR isn’t the definition of a traditional FPS game, but it definitely is one I’m more than happy to have on the VR platform. Gameplay and aesthetics were already great and enjoyable the first time around, but with the VR in-depth nature coming out to shine shows just how much better this game could get with VR; despite how good it was to begin with.

I’ll tell you what, it’s a surprising amount of work being one of the greatest assassins out in today’s society and it could definitely get a bit more difficult without a few hints and tips every now and again to keep those abilities of yours as sharp as possible.


First of all, be sure to keep your eyes open when you’re playing a level for the first time. As time goes on, the game will progressively get more and more difficult and it will require you to adapt to every situation, sometimes completely on the fly. If by some chance you do fail and have to restart the level, try to memorise what is near you, what can be used as a deadly weapon, and where your enemies are coming from. Just remember that doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results is the definition of insanity; so be sure to keep an open mind on how to tackle each situation.


Secondly, keep a strategy in mind! I don’t mean from the onset, but after a few tries, it’s generally a good idea to be aware of what’s going to happen next and what might be the best way for you to tackle it without being shattered into a million pieces. Having a certain amount of twitch-skill is necessary at all times in this game, but knowing what’s about to happen next is always a sound way to make some serious progress in the long run.

Lastly, be aware of the fact that you can take your time, pretty much all you like. While you’re not moving, enemies and their weapons are moving at an incredibly slow pace and even though you can’t move without increasing the speed, you can look around as much as you like to be aware of what might be happening next. There are going to be many times when you’re stuck in an awkward position that might make you panic, so having a quick few seconds to take a breather and carry on from there will surely help out your gameplay.


None of these erase skill and reactions from the equation, as that is easily what this game is all about; but implementing them into your next session of Superhot will surely liven up the odds for you when you’re both outnumbered and outgunned.
