The XREAL One is a pair of augmented reality smart glasses developed by XREAL, released in November 2024. It is the world's first cinematic AR glasses to feature a custom silicon chip—the XREAL X1—designed specifically for optical see-through AR glasses, enabling native 3 degrees-of-freedom (3DoF) spatial computing directly on the device.

History and Development

The XREAL One represents a significant advancement over previous XREAL products like the Xreal Air 2 and Xreal Air 2 Pro. The key innovation is the custom X1 chip, which took over three years of research and development to create. XREAL describes it as "the world's first customized silicon designed specifically for optical see-through (OST) AR glasses."[1]

The glasses were announced alongside the higher-end Xreal One Pro variant, which offers additional features including wider field of view and higher brightness.

Design and Hardware

X1 Spatial Computing Chip

The XREAL X1 chip is the defining feature of the One series. It brings several key advantages:

  • On-device Processing: All spatial computing functions are handled on the glasses themselves, eliminating the need for companion software like the Nebula app for many features
  • 3ms Motion-to-Photon Latency: Industry-leading latency ensures head movements are completely lag-free
  • Expanded Compatibility: Works with any device that has USB-C video output without requiring special software
  • Future Expandability: The X1 chip enables future accessories like the XREAL Eye camera add-on[2]

Display

The XREAL One features a Sony 0.68-inch Micro-OLED display with proprietary optics, delivering:

  • Virtual screen size up to 147 inches at 4 meters distance
  • 50° diagonal field of view
  • 120 Hz refresh rate
  • 5000 nits peak brightness
  • Ultrawide Mode with curved virtual screen up to 310 inches (32:9 aspect ratio)

Audio

The One features a unique sound chamber design with new acoustic components, professionally tuned by Bose engineers. The "Sound by Bose" audio system delivers clarity, balance, and detail for an immersive media experience.[3]

Ergonomics

At 87 grams, the XREAL One is about 10% heavier than the Xreal Air 2 (72 grams), but features a dramatically thinner frame profile that improves comfort during extended use. The electrochromic dimming eliminates the need for separate plastic light blockers that previous models required.

Lens Transparency

The One features 3 adjustable levels of lens transparency using electrochromic technology, allowing users to choose between:

  • Full transparency for AR overlay on the real world
  • Medium dimming for balanced visibility
  • Maximum dimming for immersive viewing in bright environments

Features

Screen Modes

  • Standard Mode: 147" virtual screen at 4m equivalent distance
  • Ultrawide Mode: 310" curved 32:9 ultrawide virtual display
  • 3DoF Spatial Mode: Screen stays locked in space as you move your head

Compatibility

The XREAL One works with virtually any device that has USB-C video output:

  • iPhone (15 and newer, or older with adapter)
  • Android devices
  • Steam Deck and other gaming handhelds
  • Windows PC
  • MacBook
  • PlayStation/Xbox (with adapter)

Reception

The XREAL One has received highly positive reviews from technology publications:

  • "Easily the best AR glasses you can buy right now" - Tom's Guide[3]
  • "Xreal One represents a huge shift in comfort and usability with smart display glasses thanks to the custom X1 chip inside" - Android Central[4]

Praise:

  • Revolutionary X1 chip enabling on-device spatial computing
  • Industry-leading 3ms motion-to-photon latency
  • Excellent audio quality (Sound by Bose)
  • Broad device compatibility
  • Slimmer, more refined design

Criticism:

  • $499 price point higher than previous models ($50 more than Air 2 Pro)
  • 50° FOV still limited compared to VR headsets
  • No hand tracking or advanced AR features

Accessories

  • XREAL Eye: $99 camera add-on for photos and video recording (upcoming)
  • XREAL Beam Pro: Spatial computing host device
  • Prescription lens inserts: Available for users who wear glasses
