Introduction

Modbox is being created by Alientrap for the HTC Vive. It employs physics sandbox with mods, toys and fun object destruction all in VR. The game is like a digital playground where the users can play with their friends and the core focus of the game is on the multiplayer aspects.

Features

The users have the ability to create their own Holodeck experience to play and also share it with other users. The users can create Rube Goldberg style large room scale creations by using the HTC Vive’s controllers. The created work can be shared online inside the game and other users’ works can be accessed online. Construction in the game is done by touching the primitives together. The game is quite broad in the sense that it allows the gamers to add ropes, rockets, pistons, propellers, hinge joints etc. The control of the constructed objects is done through levers and throttles.

The tools and library of the game objects enable the user/creator of the environment to build on its play box from scratch on a blank canvas in a 3D virtual environment. Modbox allows the user to bring pre-built assets like chainsaws, hand guns, swords, bowling balls, basket balls, revolvers etc. in the world. The editor mode enables the user to merge shapes and preview them fusing into a rigid object before switching to play mode and seeing it in action. The materials inside the world behave like they would in the real world. For example, the glass in the VR shows exact characteristics upon being smashed to bits as in the real world and metals require extreme force to be damaged. Some of the objects require interactive actions to work, like the chainsaw requires a cord to be pulled. The core feature of Modbox is its multiplayer. The users can join their friends in a new, blank universe which they can create, play and destroy together[1] [2].

The game is a big leap forward in the sandbox VR realm. Modbox provides the users the platform and tools to create and use their virtual worlds accordingly.

Launch Information

Modbox is set to be launched in early 2016 to SteamVR. The game early access is unavailable in the steam store right now since it is still in developing stages. The game is specifically designed for the HTC Vive.
