==Review==
It has to be said; developers really do come up with some interesting names nowadays for their games, and despite just how random and bizarre those names might actually be, they still manage to make their game fitting for the title. For Kittypocalypse it is literal in the sense that the apocalypse has come, and apparently it is brought out by the impending doom of cats!
Moving on from the peculiar title that the game has got going for itself; if you’re at all wondering what the gameplay is about, allow me to state that the game is in actual fact a tower defence game that is set in VR. You’re tasked with setting up a number of defences around your base to protect yourself from the onslaught of killer, alien kitties! Yes, I said it – they are in actual fact aliens; not that it matters all that much in terms of gameplay, but it is a little bit of an extra that is at the very least worth mentioning.
The way the gameplay works is similar to many other tower defence games; you have a number of different turrets that you can place all around the map – all of which have their own specific use in certain scenarios, depending on what you might need them for. While it would be lovely to place down turrets all over the place without a need to be concerned about cost or placement or something like that, we’re not treated with that kind of luck.
To place down new turrets and upgrade them you’re going to need to have the cash on hand, which for some strange reason you get from shooting these alien kitties sky-high. When you’ve accumulated enough cash, you can place the turrets where you please – to some degree, as there are only so many spots that you can place these turrets. To combat this issue, you can simply upgrade your turrets so they do an increased amount of damage and to leave the alien kitties running away with their tail between their legs.
As with any VR game, the immersion is an important element, and even though you’re in a first person perspective, it isn’t all that special; due to the fact that you’re not actually controlling the turrets at any point. All you end up doing is placing them down to where you choose, upgrading when necessary and watching the carnage unfold before you. In terms of controls and movement, you get to pick and choose between a couple of different settings, one of which has you seeing the battlefield from a birds-eye perspective to see it from a more tactical view. The other view has you floating around the level, giving you the chance to see it all up close and personal, as you so choose. It doesn’t really matter which of the two you decide to focus on when you’re playing, as you can switch between them with ease and without issue.
One of the bigger elements in the game is the aesthetics and the environments, most of which do their job quite well. On some levels you’ve got some great looking scenery and great backgrounds to go along with everything else, however, it gets overshadowed to some degree as certain elements of these levels don’t look the best, thanks to some of the objects. The kitties themselves don’t look anything particularly special, but they get the job done and when they get blasted away and you get to see them flying all about the place; now that quickly makes up for it.
Overall, Kittypocalypse doesn’t do all that much to reinvent the tower defence genre, even if it is in VR. The VR aspect doesn’t add too much to the gameplay and simply gives you the chance to see what’s going on in a first person perspective. An improvement to this gameplay design would be giving the player the chance to actually use the turrets when they like; just to add that little bit extra of enjoyment. Aesthetically the game looks nice in an overall sense, but there are some areas where some visual improvements might be an appreciated added touch. For the most part, though, the game is fun; it just doesn’t need to be a VR title and doesn’t add all that much to it because of this choice.
